quote ''In a game I was attacked by some virus that fortunately was detected by Norton Antivirus. Always protect yourself when playing with strangers!''

i really dont think this has anything to do with hoi, would be more sensible if your virusscanner was scanning your hd and found something there, or an email with a virus was discovered.
never heard anything like playing a game online would make you vulnareble to virus threats.

yes several ports need to be open in order to let hoi function proper, so in theory you are somewhat opened up for exploits, but then again this is the same for using internet explorer, email prgrams, and all other applications that use internet. so if your a bit paranoid, better dont use internet at all.

But what if I open all the ports?

I asked this question because viruses started squarming in our LAN a day after I played and it happened twice (twice played/twice viruses). It might be a coincidence - but it's worth asking...

Openning the ports doesn't specifically make you vulnerable. To be "hacked" or "infected" you must have a vulnerable service running on one of your PCs inside your network. For instance if you have a MS SQL server running and you have port 1447(?) open then you'll almost guaranteed get infected by Slammer (I see attempts blocked by my firewall constantly).

So it really depends on what you have running on your network.

For HoI it's best if you just open the mentioned ports (2300 to 2400 and 47624).
