Can you hotkey armies?

I'm having a heck of a time trying to keep my forward calvary forces from getting embroiled in a siege (really screws up my attrition). Would it be possible to hot key, then if they get stuck select them and move them out?

I recall reading somewhere how to hotkey but can't find it again ...

Yes you can.

It's RTS style number + SHIFT (or was it crtl).

'Ctrl' + '[number]' gives the chosen unit that number

'[number]' selects the numbered unit. Press the number again and the map centres on that unit.
