Can you play a not ruling dynasty?
For example in Byzantine Empire the ruling dynasty is of Ducas. But also a great family was Comnenoi. Can you play this family as a vassal?

If not, is it possible to change your dynasty? Taking the previous example can you arrange marriages with Comninoi and later your dynasty will be renamed to Comnenoi?

It is obvious what I want to play! :D But also I really dislike Ducas dynasty.

Thank you
Konstantine

From what I've gathered it will be possible to play a non-ruling dynasty. The objective of course being to make them a ruling one. :)

That would be nice. However, how would you be supposed to become the ruling one? Marriages? Claiming a county? Gathering a private army?
From what I've understood (don't take my words as the gospel though), all of the above.

AFAIK Johan has confirmed that you can play "lower" lords. :)

When I read the FAQ, and especially post #20 of the FAQ, I get the impression that it will be possible to play non-ruling dynasties.

This is a quote from post 20 of the FAQ:
"On how much alike CK is to Snowball's earlier version:

Yes.. to a 95-99% degree.

For example.. Some changes have been done...
- We've added 2 new scenarios.. 1187 & 1337.
- You can also play vassals and any count thats around.

Havard and Beowulf -

You are both correct, of course, in that you can play as Dukes and Counts as vassals to other lords. I was under the impression, though, that the original poster was interested in playing a non-ruling family that did not have a fief. In the Byzantine Empire, the Comneni family may have held a position as a Duke at one time or another, but they *certainly* were not ruling a fief as vassal to the Emperor.

Even considering the various Despotates that existed in the last two and a half centuries of the Empire (after 1204), few if any of them would be considered 'vassals' in the western sense. More often than not they were just another level of provincial administration.

Can't play without land.

Yeah, that's what I was implying with my post, when I suggested not getting one's hopes up over it.... ;)

Also, I was suggesting in my post directly above that the leading Byzantine families should *not* be represented as vassals to the Emperor, except for perhaps a few more isolated examples later in the game. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.... ;)

Then if someone wants to play the Byz. he has to stuck with the Ducas family for the entire game?

hmmm

Well, you can probably arrange it so that your sons 'die off' in some manner, and marry your daughter to a Comneni. Then, you're the Comnenian dynasty. You do know that Alexius I was married to a Ducas in real life, right? ;)

but

But it isn't a dynasty game?
If you loose your dynasty leader and then the next leader is not let's say Ducas but a Comninos, doesn't loose the game since your dynasty dies?

I think what you are saying is true. Someone needs to confirm that the dynasty follows male heirs only. It makes sense it would work that way.
