I know it says somewhere that you need a 512k connection, but I was thinking whether it was possible to play on a 33.6k or 56k modem?

You have too have a minimum 56k modem too play. I did play a few times with 1 56k modem user while we were 5 players. Although all other players had cable and adsl. So I guess if there are more 56k modem users in a 5 player game, it will crash.
If you all are 56k modem user in your group. I suggest playing with max 3 players, for avoiding irritating crashes.

In first 100 years of game it will be no problem with modem,if there are no more than 3 players and the other players got higher than modem.We are playing at time a 4 player game.isdn64k,cable,modem56k and isdn128k and 100 years there are perhaps 10 crashes.But in 1600 one guy was kicked to desktop,sometimes all 5 minutes we must reload the game,and thats of course no fun.Hosting with a modem would be unpossible,perhaps a 2 player game you can host,but later in the game it will crash too.So if all got cable or higher and a 4-5 player game,there wouldnt be much troubles.
