I can't connect to valkynet (apparantly a problem for everyone)
But i can't connect using IP either.... My friend and I both have the newest patch, (1.3 i guess) we both have broadband internet, and neither of us are behind a router, and neither of us have a firewall so no ports are being blocked (we play other online games and htey work fine)

to host: i type in my ip in the box (just in case) and hit the host button, and thats it, andthen
to join: type in the ip in the box, hit the join button, and it says can't find a game at that ip...
anyone have any ideas? also: i can ping his ip and he can ping mine fine...

my friend has unlimited time setup in it too so could that be preventing us?

Are you behind a school or company network that has firewall without you realizing?

nah, I normally am using a firewall (D-Link with DMZ Host set) but i plugged my cat5 cable directly from the modem to my computer so it's def. not that... like i said, we can ping each other, nothing is blocking it.

I believe VNet is back up, by the way.

We were trying it before and it was not working right, when we went in, it said channels could not be recieved, make sure you are connected to the internet.

When is 'before'? I think it only came back up yesterday or the day before.

But even then, that's not the message I was getting when the service was down, so I still agree with Blitz that it's something other than VNet.

is that the server it's suppose to conenct to? that's what mine says....
It worked once many many months ago, i've never even tried multiplayer, just logged into vnet

I've played mostly as direct IP MP vicky. If you don't have any hardware or software firewall (router, zone alarm, etc.) then it's simply one person host, the other person type in the IP and join, as long as you 2 have identicle setup of vicky (i.e. both have vanilla vicky patched to 1.03b) then you can connect. I haven't had any problems not able to connect, if you do, try to disable your background programs that may interfere with it one by one and it should work.

DR found out zone alarm pro can work with vicky recently, need to set security setting to medium. I don't know what other programs interfere with vicky though.

Is your internet connection going through NAT? The modem provided by my ISP uses NAT to enable me to connect several computers to the Internet through one IP-address, so I had to configure the modem to forward the relevant ports to my gaming PC to enable me to join (and host) MP games.

that I'm not sure about, any idea how to check?

I don't think so, because I play and host other games with Themadcapsyd alot, Age of empires, Civilization 3, Empire Earth, they always work, and I'm always the host... and the Vnet still doesn't let me connect :-\
He has the time patch, so i downloaded it, and it still diddnt help me any

you both have games from the same publisher right?

back in the EUII days it could cause problems playing with different publishers versions except through Vnet

If you're able to host other games, I seriously doubt that's it.

In any case, you can check your machine's IP; if it's 10.0.0.(something), it's a local IP-address, typically with NAT (there are others too, but I don't remember them right now). You ISP should also be able to provide you with info.

or 192.168.x.x numbers :)

If you have those local IP address go to
www.whatismyip.com

it'll tell you what is your IP to the outside world.

Then it's Strategy First (Paradox is (usually "just") the developer.

yeah, i use whatismyip.com my ip is 192.168.x.x

how do i know what publisher my victoria is? i see Paradox and Strategy First, is that it?

192.168.x.x are internal numbers, it's fine for LAN but not for WAN. If you have router, see if your router can give you your external IP
