I am running the latest game update

Yes

Required

Summary

Cannot continue the game after the death of the player character, as the "succession window" is supposedly open, but never actually appeared

Description

My player character died as a result of an event while hunting. The event occurred at the end of the hunt when the deer was circled and I had 4 choices, kill the deer myself, let two other hunters do it or cancel the hunt. The first 3 options all indicated that the character killing the deer might die, which indeed happened. After the death of my player character, the game immediately switched to the direct successor, in this case my son, and I can still operate all HUD elements, but the game does not continue despite pressing the pause button several times. It simply tells me ‘You can view, but not affect the game while the Succession window is open’ - however, the Succession window never appeared and refuses to appear. This makes this Ironman savegame unusable, as no more time passes.

Steps to reproduce

1. take part in a hunt
2. continue until the event where the deer is circled and the game presents you with several options to kill the deer, but all with the possibility of a character dying in the process
3. decide in favour of the option to kill the deer yourself, with a ~ 20% chance that your player character will die
4. your player character dies as a result of the event, your direct successor becomes playable, but the so-called succession window never appears and thus makes it impossible to continue playing, as time no longer progresses because the game assumes that the above-mentioned window is still open

This is actually a very common issue, I also found a thread on Reddit about it.
The only solution is to initiate a new hunt with the player heir immediately after the death of the player character (which is obviously only possible if you have enough money, I needed to scrap all my artifacts for this). Then instead of taking part in a new hunt, you will be brought back to the old event and will be informed that your already deceased player character just died, which in turn will finally bring up the "succession window". After you close this window, the game is playable again with the player heir. Super infuriating bug, especially on Ironman saves!!!

I had a similar thing, but had my character take his own life. Obviously cannot just replicate that with my heir. Now just stuck on this.
