Can't enter Japanese territory?

Hi everyone,
I'm playing Victoria Revolutions as China. I've managed to civilize. I'm way out in front with Industry, have a competitive Military rating (#5, but we're all close), and respectable Prestige (#6). Overall, I'm ranked as the #1 Great Power in the world. I ended up satelliting Korea before Japan could gobble them up. They managed to annex two provinces before I could intervene.

Anyway, Japan ended up DoWing on Korea again, so I got pulled into the war. Japan is well behind me in all rankings, but when I tried to send troops into the Korean territories Japan currently owns or even launch troops from a transport onto mainland Japan, I keep getting seeing an X when I right-click. I could have pummeled them in a war, but the game would only let me invade provinces that they just had colonial buildings in.

This is so strange to me and I can't figure out why the game wouldn't let me invade... in the Opium War I successfully invaded and occupied all of Australia and New Zealand as well as parts of India. If I could invade the world's premier superpower as a drastically weaker, uncivlized power, they why am I now not able to invade a much weaker opponent now?

If both you and Japan are civilized, you're probably engaged in a colonial war over Korea. In colonial wars only colonial territory can be entered (at least under normal circumstances), so Japan would be off limits for you then.

But what about the Korean provinces that Japan doesn't have cores on. Would I still not be able to attack those during a colonial war?

Most likely not. Japan is allowed to turn territory captured from Korea into non-colonial territory by granting statehood, and will almost certainly have done so as soon as they got it from them. It's because Japan has its capital in Asia, which allows them (and you) to grant statehood to any area in Asia.

There is an exploit with regards to this where you're allowed to enter into non-colonial territory belonging to your enemy if there is a land border between colonial territory owned by him and his non-colonial territory. But I don't think you'll have that ability here.
