my buddy and i tried to play an MP game of HOI2 this weekend. we were on a 2 computer network that was not connected to the internet. we weren't behind a router and we didn't have a firewall. our computers could see each other on the network and i was able to transfer my 1.1 patch to his computer without any problem. when i hosted a game and he tried to join it, he would select the "LAN" game type, and the scroll box would say <no game found>, beneath the no-game-found would be my computer name, but it was greyed out and not selectable.

once again, we were not behind a firewall, no router, and we were able to locate each other on the network. both game folders were shared. both games were patched to 1.1, although the 4 letters after the version number were different on his computer than on mine.

now, we were using the SAME copy of the game. will HOI2 not allow multiplayer games based off the same install disk? (both computers were mine - my buddy's copy is on order :D )

does anyone know what's up with this? i'm hoping it's something simple.
thanks

Make sure the NAME of the version is the same. My buddy and I couldn't connect as we both used the EXACT same patch (1.1, he downloaded it to me) but we had a different NAME of the version. He repatched and we were able to connect again as we had the same version NAME.
If he does it and again and doesn't have the same version NAME then either he had a bad install or he modified the files.

Glad I could help :)

Thats the reason for sure. As cop115 said the name (4 letters) needs to be exactly same.

I find it strange that applying the same patch doesn't give the same version but try again and if it doesn't work I guess you'll have to post a question in the support forum. :)

ok, so what does the name mean? mine said RCBY or something and his said OCOH i think. i'll test again. one thing i DO remember is that the version name that he had at one point was the same one that MY computer had, so is it possible that mine was changed?

what makes the version name? to the best of my knowledge, we installed the game from the same disk and the EXACT same patch.

thx very much

Like I said previously, my buddy and I had the EXACT same issue. We both used the same patch and had different version names with obviously the same patch number. Repatching over the patch solved the prob.

No idea as to the root behind that.... bad patching files?

The game engine performs a checksum calculation over all relevant database files (ie. tech defninitions, model definitions, province definitions, etc). That results in a 4 character 'name' which is shown on the top right of the screen.

That name is used to quickly check if all players use the same version of the database files. Otherwise, one player could cheat and lower the production cost of a panzer division from 20 to 2 IC, and noone would detect it. Well, not until the game CtD's because of those mismatches.

Our players group(Warsaw's LAN) had the same problem, i sopose that u have XP windows (i found no problems on 98SE). I'll ask Boromir to write down here what he did to make our connection working.

i think i know what it was. i installed stoney road graphics mod and my buddy didn't. after i installed it i went back to using the original game graphics, so i had an extra folder with a bunch of junk in it in my game drive.

now i know! :)

We had a similiar problem on a LAN, all installs of the game were the same (1.1, fresh installs), no firewalls, 3 XPs and 1 win98 could see each other via IP, same workgroup. We still couldn't connect with the host - no game found - regardless whether we attempted to connect via the LAN option or Internet (by specifying the host IP). Never had any such problems with HOI1 or EU2. Why we couldn't connect via TCP/IP is really beyond me - next game I'll install windump and have a look at what's going on.

So we started experimenting - we installed IPX/SPX, set the frames to 802.3 (not auto), selected LAN multiplayer and it worked. You can also make sure Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled, also the workgroup should be the same.
