I live in the US and have decent internet (5meg) with a normal ping to the major hubs of around 30-50 MS. My buddy lives in Australia and has GREAT internet 100+ meg, little laggy to US hubs 100+.

We play all sort of games together, Company of Heroes 2, GTA 5 ect ect with only minor lag issues. But In Stellaris we can't not even join the same lobby's due to connections timing out. The few times we have gotten in game he almost immediately starts flashing red in the date bar and the game locks up.

Can anyone tell me why games that require much more rapid connections (GTA5) work fine but this slow paced game crashes and burns due to some lag?

Does his internet provider subscribe to the Australian government's internet spying program? Officially, it was discontinued, but all they actually did was discontinued the unsuccessful filtering/blocking component, the monitoring component is still going, with real time spying conducted by both state and federal police/security services. It does slow down net traffic considerably. If he asks, his provider should tell him if they are either (1) allowing security/police access; or (2) providing information to them.

The fact is, Australia is now a fascist police state.

I tried playing MP a while ago, with a superb connection ... from China ...
unfortunately all the games I tried to join, I lagged the game too much. (so sad I loved it :()
I think it is because there are no locally hosted servers, that I was connecting to someone's personal computer on the other side of the planet.. Maybe I could play with others in East Asia side of Earth, but haven't tried

Hmmm, I should test this, I am in Singapore at the moment. Join with some people in Europe.
