I am trying to get EU running on my PC. My system specs are:

Pentium III 500 Mhz
256 MB memory
Diamond Viper 550 video card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Xgamer sound card
40GB (C:) and 20GB (D:) hard drives (EU installed on D:)
DVD drive (R:)
CD-RW drive (S:)

I just added the 40 GB hard drive, and took the opportunity to rebuild the machine from scratch using Windows ME. When I did so, I made sure I downloaded all the latest drivers and bios updates from the various vendors (including DirectX 8.0).

I have the Strategy First version of the game. The installation went without a problem. I then loaded the 1.09NA patch off the Strategy First website. I tried to start the game, got the Safedisk spalsh, the screen blanked for about 10-20 seconds, then was thrown back out to the desktop. I found the 1.10NA patch on the Paradox website and tried that to no avail. So I'm dead in the water. Any suggestions?

Kill all running programs, especially anti-virus, before starting EU. Also try starting it with the No Music icon, see if that helps.

I tried as you suggest (load on C drive, no music, kill everything...), but still no go. I saw a post that mentioned safedisk problems on CD-RW and DVD drives. That's all I have, so if it won't run on those, I'm out-of-luck. Too bad, because I was really looking forward to playing this game.

Does it run before you put any patches on? We have had one or two say 1.09 caused problems, if so we might have to source 1.08 for you.

I tried it out-of-the-box and get the same end result. Either I get a small white box (out-of-box), a Safedisk splash (1.09) or nothing (1.10). Then the screen goes blank, and it appears to reset the resolution (I briefly see the desktop at 800x600). Then it crashes out to the desktop with no error message.

I think I'm going to load some other games onto the system. I was rebuilding the system from scratch. I've already loaded most of theapps (Office, Quicken, etc.) and they work properly. I've only loaded 2 games other then EU and both of those are working. Maybe I'll load a couple more and see if they work. I guess I might have screwed up the rebuild somehow.

Is anyone out there running EU and Windows ME? How about running it off a DVD or CD-RW drive?

I'm running on ME w/ a CD-RW. Never had that trouble before or after patching. My troubles involved trying to save the game I was playing.

The other folks that have had this problem seem to have gotten resolution by talking to the folks responsible for the copy-protection, in your case that looks to be Strategy First. Some kind of driver issue w/ the CD-RW. More ram seems to help in other cases, I'm running w/ 256M myself.

Good luck.

Got it working! Problem had to do with the avi blowing out when EU tried to run the startup movie. I had noticed that Windows Media Player crashed on some avi files. While looking at DLL's in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory, I noticed it looked like some bad app had overwritten a couple dll's with older versions! So I reinstalled Windows Me (what a pain) and everything worked!

Thanks for everyone's help!
