So, I've noticed that, for some unknown reason, cars on express ways will give way to cars joining the express way. I've actually seen a queue build up on one whilst drivers sit and happily wait for others to join. This is pretty odd behaviour! I guess it's not by design?

Yep, already tried that, gets exactly the same effect - even though the one way street apparently has a give way line at the end of it!

It wouldn't be such a big deal but i wanted to tweak the ruleset so that I get heavy traffic to make things harder, and this just causes queues on the expressway!

When I was driving through France this is exactly how it happened. There were signs reminding you to give way to cars joining the motorway. It is meant to be a safety feature as joining the motorway is risky as you don't have full visibility so this means the cars on the motorway hold a higher responsibility and are at fault if they drive in front of you.

That doesn't make much sense to me. It basically negates the benefits of a high speed road network if you have to keep stopping to let cars on. I'd be interested to see what the statistics are for accidents when joining motorways using the 'traditional' not give way method. I'll bet there's not much benefit to this approach.

Anyway, in terms of this game I'd at the very least like to be able to make the cars give way on the slip road, rather than the expresss way. I've seen another topic asking for definable 'give-way' points so I guess this is a +1 for that!

This is only true for certain types of express roads classified as departmental or city avenues, and not full motorway standard roads (although the difference is occasionally only a question of classification and not road standard). This is the case on the Paris inner ring (Peripherique), which is noted for its severe traffic issues, where merging traffic has priority over traffic on the road.

In the Netherlands, if you can't get on the freeway at the end of your strip, you should hit your brakes and try to merge in then..
But, mostly people will allow you to get on(by switching lanes)

Its the same way in Canada, when merging onto the Highway, the person MERGING onto the highway gives way generally. If it was the other way around I feel like it would really slow down traffic, what would be the point of a highway then haha?

Although during rush hour generally (atleast in BC and ON where I have driven) when the traffic is stop and go, motorists on the highway already will usually let people merging in (entering the freeway) ahead seeing as the traffic is already slow.

Yes, people will let you on by switching lanes. However, it is technically wrong; you're not allowed to change lanes without an obstacle (car with elderly people, truck, etc) in front of you.
I was actually stopped by an officer of the law, who kindly reminded me of that fact, and told me to stick to backroads with my "toy car". I made a smart comment after he insulted my Smart (ha), and got two fines; one for making him look like an idiot in front of his colleague, and one for "performing confusing and unnecessary manouvres on the highway. Bast'rds.

in germany and UK - we have no signages such give way to other traffic but generally you see set of traffic lights at end of ramps - they control traffic when road is busy

Wtf? In the UK, traffic joining a motorway is required to give way to the traffic already on the motorway - try paying attention to the road markings! And you generally never see traffic lights at the end of motorway ramps, with the exception of a handful of urban motorways and the busiest stretches. The last round of funding for such a project, in 2006, was for just 30 sliproads in the whole of the UK.

Yes, added to the issue with vehicles merging from 5 lanes to 1 6km before their exit, this one is quite a biggy! The whole point of an expressway is that the traffic on the expressway should be as free-flowing as possible; this means that vehicles already on the expressway do not slow down for those joining unless the traffic volume has reached a certain level at which point users will allow others in (a point made by one of the other posters).
Of course, traffic modelling is an immensely complicated area and no computer model can yet accurately tell us why traffic jams occur on expressways (although where a lot of traffic joins it is quite obvious) so I don't blame the developers for this one! Suffice to say, when approaching a junction on an expressway, vehicles should generally pull into an overtaking lane if there is traffic joining.

It's nice that we've ended up discussing the nuances of traffic laws all across the world, but the original issues brought up in the thread is a real issue, I believe. You could make this huge expressway, 5+ lanes wide in one direction, but it will grind to a halt all because people stay in one lane the hole time and keep yielding to cars coming in off the ramps. And it will go back and forth, ramp to mainline, mainline to ramp. Then it grinds to a halt. It makes a decent sized city with a real expressway system almost unworkable. I generally like this game but I was hoping that this issue would have been addressed by now. To me, this is an issue with the simulator itself which should take more priority than adding more buses.

I have found the best way is to add a lane after an on-ramp and subtract one after an off-ramp. So if you have a one-lane on-ramp join a two-lane highway, make the section of highway after the intersection a three-lane highway. This works really well when you have an off-ramp followed by an on-ramp. Make the section of highway between the off-ramp and on-ramp one lane smaller then the rest of the highway.

Great suggestion, It would be nice if you could post a picture for others to see.
