Have you guys tried to make Japan Catholic with the events in the early 17th century? Is it worth it? Does Japan become westernized, with fast research?
It is amusing to play a trade dominance game with Nippon, staying small intentionally, then converting to Catholic (and thence to Reformed for the trade boost). So yes, it is a reasonable thing to do. As Fail there says, the conversion does not get you out of the China techgroup, which is the #1 reason for your tech backwardness. So it is not like becoming European. However it does significantly improve your techspeed; assuming you've managed to ditch Ezochi on Manchu, it will drop from 1.8 to 1.6 (or 1.56 for reformed). This is one of the multipliers for tech cost, so basically you are talking about a 12 or 14% decrease in tech costs. http://www.paradoxian.org/eu2wiki/index.php/Technology#Religion_Addend
Thanks, guys! So there's no way of getting out of the eastern tech group with Japan, apart from creating my own events/ editing the save game? I didn't see any such event in the Japan file... I remember vaguely some westernization events, but I think those are in Vicky.
