When I put my CD into the drive, the whole computer freezes. Nothing works. If I press all the keys on the keyboard at the same time, not even a "bip" comes.

If I take the CD out and insert another one, the computer wakes up again. Then I receive an error message saying that "demo.exe" wouldn't run. Then the whole intro screen close down.

This effectively hinders me from installing my game. I have not tried to uninstall, clear registry or whatever you do, and then put it in, because that would mess up my situation. All I want is a separate install of the game, in another folder.

I have tried copy-pasting all the files in the eu2 folder, but when running eu2.exe from the copy, the screen turns black and the computer freezes in a similar manner. Here, nothings helps. I have to manually reset the computer to regain control. I assumed this was an issue with some .dll file. Copy-pasting rarely is a reliable way to move programs.

But in the above case, I am really feeling deprived. Any help?

Has this CD ever worked in this PC or in another PC? Does it now work in another PC?

Basically it seems to me the CD is bad, or has gone bad.

This CD has always worked before, in the same PC.

I have not tested it's compatibility with any other PC.

When I look at the disc, it seems to be in perfect physical condition; no scratches at all.

EDIT: The problem is solved. I am not sure what I did, but after repeated sending the disc in and out of the drive, as well as turning all my firewalls and anti-virus-stuff off, it is now working.

Thanks anyway.

EDIT2: OK, there's another question; how do I do if I want to install the program parallel to an install I already have? Running the setup.exe only gives me the options to "remove" or "repair". Do I mix with the registry?

Simply copy the entire game directory structure to the new place. The registry is used for applying updates, not during play at all.

Well, I have no idea what's causing that, others have done it many times with success. See in the Mods forum, it's the standard way of having a vanilla and a modded EU2 running.

You could try renaming the AVI directory to AVI-back. Failing that I guess I'd look at a complete reinstall.

All right. I shall see what can be done. Thanks.

Hm, it seems I've found the root of my problem. The eu2.exe malfunctions when the main folder is not called "Europa Universalis II", as it was installed as. Renaming it to, f.e., "Europa Universalis II_multi" and executing eu2.exe, makes the screen go black and the whole computer freezes with no viable thing to do but manual restart (hitting the button on the can).

Can this be due to some .dll file hiding in the Windows folder only informed of the path to "\Europa Universalis II\", and failing to run when the folder is named otherwise? Or are there other reasons? Is it perhaps possible to change? It's not really necessary, since I only have to rename the main folder to have different mods running (that can't be run through moddir), which is easy, but it could be even more user-friendly.

I don't believe anyone else is experiencing this problem. But you might ask in the User Mods forum, specifically about running more than one copy of EU2 for mod purposes. Since you say you are using mods that require this, the people who wrote those mods and their other users must have accomplished what you are trying to do without coming across the problem you have.

But the thing is that even if I'm not using a mod, having a completely clean vanilla 1.09 installation, and then renaming the main folder, the eu2.exe won't run.

It's probably some windows issue, as I get a warning saying "some programs may stop working if you rename this folder" when trying to rename. I didn't take that seriously first, but it seems that has something to do with it. I wonder what?
