I am using a Strategy First Victoria CD which I purchased in 2004. My computer runs Windows XP Home Edition version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 on a Dell DE051 desktop with a x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel 2.53 GHz CPU. It has 512 MB RAM with 40 GBs open on the hard drive. The video card is an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 PCI with 128 MB running driver version 6.14.0010.9371. The sound device is SoundMAX Digital Audio running version 5.12.0001.7000.
I've followed everything from the sticky that I could up until the point of installing the CD.
Brief description of the problem: I put the Victoria CD into my CD-RW drive, I hear the drive doing the initial scan of it, but when I double-click my CD drive, I get an empty white screen like there is no disk in the drive.
I have tried the following: I put other program and music CDs in the drive and they read successfully. The physical condition of the Victoria CD is in good shape, no scratches or other marks visible (I have not tried the Victoria CD in another computer's CD-ROM yet). I have changed the IDE channel properties from DMA to PIO.
I have had similar problems like this before with another game (Sims 2). From what I understand, the installation of Sims 2 put something into the system registry that disables my CD-RW drive from reading certain CDs (related to Safedisk?). I finally got around the dependability issues of accessing my CD drive by using DAEMON Tools to use Sims 2, but the CD drive still refuses to read other CDs occasionally (Victoria, in this case).
Is there anything you can think of that I may have overlooked? I was thinking about downloading Vic:Revolutions, but I would need Victoria installed on my system once again.
Thank you
