Apparently my little brother decided to start 'customizing' my steam account, and now Magicka is forcing my wizard to have the name A>TSFA<Patchou rather than something halfway decent (the 'A's seem to be artifacts from the game not encoding the <<-type things right, and have odd dots above them). Is there a way to convince Magicka to use a different name for my wizard?

Your steam account? You can always change the name of your steam account if you're referring to the wizard name in chat(it's somewhere in steam's settings, shouldn't be too hard to find).
As far as the wizard name in game goes, If you hit esc after your wizard is selected, you can make a new wizard with a different name after you join the slot again.
