Gameplay suggestions, expansion ideas
Intro
During a co-op play with a friend of mine, I casually dropped the idea of a missing mechanic. To play with the cards the enemy plays (as you can see them in their discard/vanish piles). We both believed it to be a fun concept. I thought about it a bit more and I came up with 2 characters during my time playing Total War Warhammer 3. Therefore my characters are heavily inspired by characters of this series in the terms of looks or factions. Please enjoy reading my suggested gameplay mechanics and character suggestions.
The Revenant
The Revenant is based off of the Changeling in Warhammer. The Changeling (image attached) can only attach his buildings to settlements instead of fully taking them over. He can be either harmful or helpful to the host settlement. But his true awesomeness lies in his second ability to transform himself into another general or hero type character during battles and gaining their form, abilities and spells.
In Across the Obelisk, the Revenant would be a resurrected mage who escaped from the shadow realm with the explosion in the princess' tower. Their mind would be partly corrupted from being in that shadow realm and now they are searching for balance in their mind (which would be achieved from defeating Archon Nihr and forcing him to restore their mind). They could be randomly encountered in acts 2 or 3 in a random node (resembling their wandering around) or guaranteed in act 4 if the spawn would not trigger through a node with their picutre on it like normal characters are.
Their exclusive gameplay would be to have access to 5 "Changeling cards" that would be targetable on an enemy. The Revenant would then transform into that enemy and the 5 cards would be randomly changed into cards that enemy normal uses. In the case of bosses that would be a weakened version of them. This could be including defensive actions, healing spells, damaging cards or one-time used enchantments (like the silencing enchantment from syrens). The rest of the Revenant starting cards would be to have mind and/or shadow spells in the mage set and perks that would complement that playstyle, or the "Changeling" playstyle. This could be either more Changeling cards, or the ability to make them a 'discover' action (pick out of 3 in sets of 2/2/1 copies of the same card each fight).
The starting equipment would be "Mindgames" to always grab a "Changeling" card on the first turn as an accessory. This would be a steady help in the early game and a choice to make in the later stages of the game (to keep the accessory or switch it out). The starting trait would be to gain an extra "Changeling" card on every act after the first.
The Vile Vermin
The rat-men are a race in Warhammer as well as in Across the Obelisk. In Warhammer (called the Skaven) they are mostly vile creatures who do everything to come out on top like: backstabbing, stealing, murder and they do not know any compassion, mercy or empathy. One of those things comes into Across the Obelisk as an advantage to the player: The Vile Vermin who is based on one of the most devious and cunning of all rat-men in Warhammer (Tretch Craventail, see attached image).
The Vile Vermin would be a new Rogue style adventurer, who specializes in sneaking and stealing. They would grant themselves stealth in fights and hit from the shadows. They would team up well with Zek as some rogue cards with shadow damage and dark debuffs would be added along this character. They would be found in a secret node in the first forest, or within the rat realm of the blue zone sewers while they were stealing from the fellow rat-men.
Their unique mechanic would revolve around vanishing their own cards to steal the cards that the enemy has played (and which can be found in their discard pile). This would require stealth as a buff on them and when a card would be dragged to a special zone on the character avatar, the player can select a card from the enemy discard pile and use it for that battle.
The stealing mechanic would be the first trait they have access to. In their perk tree there could be buffs to sneaking and dealing direct damage or to buff the stealing mechanic (for example 2 cards stolen with vanish instead of 1 card for the entire battle, or being able to also steal from the enemy vanish pile).
Closing Statement
I realise the names and likelyhoods of the aforementioned characters cannot be simply taken over from Warhammer, but I shared them here as an inspiration. These two character suggestions come from the wish that enemy cards and enchantments are awesome and powerful and it would be fun to play and mess around with. I'll just leave these suggestions here and maybe we can see them in the game someday.
