Chat in MP

Hi. Simple question.
Since my manual obviously doesn't contain the "Multiplayer" section referred to on the first couple of pages, it would be great to know if there actually is a chat function... and if so, how to activate it.

Use the tab key.
All human players will be shown in a list.
Click on a human player to toggle whether they see your messages
