Hi there,

I've recently bought Crusader Kings II (from gamersgate), have downloaded the newest patch and got the character editor. My checksum is LNGM.

My brother has also recently bought Crusader Kings II (from a store, installed via steam), and has downloaded the newest patch. His checksum is JNGM.

Neither of us has modded the game, to my knowledge or to his. But because our checksums differ, we can't play multiplayer.

Has anyone got any idea what might be causing this problem, or how to fix it?

has your brother tried running it with the ck2 exe?
or tried a fresh instal?
you both are trying after restarting the game? no resign then multiplayer business?

he has resigned from a game and then tried to join an MP game, which deliberately changes the checksum. He must exit the whole game and start up again, when I suspect he will find the checksum is the same as your, correct, one.

Since I have the same problem as he does, I will highjack this thread.

My checksum SXAX, my friend's is FLAN, how do we get in tune? He even reinstalled his game and its still FLAN. Entering and resigning from a game only changes the first letter, which then resets back to the original SXAX or FLAN when a new game is powered. So how can we get in tune with the same damn checksum?

In EU3 he says that there was a cache folder to empty, but we found nothing of sort in CK2 folder. Help please?

You BOTH have bad checksums, assuming you are not loading mods of any sort. You'll both need to do full clean reinstalls.

If this is Steam: uninstall the game from Steam and move any valued save games elsewhere. Manually delete the CK2 directories from under the Steam AND MyDocuments folders, now reinstall the game via Steam.

If GamersGate: Move valued save games elsewhere, and uninstall the game. Manually delete the CK2 directories from where GG put them and from MyDocuments. Reinstall the game , download 1.05c patch again and apply it.

We both reinstalled. From GamersGate by the way, both of us.

He has now the normal checksum, LNGM, but I got NPPS. So the only solution is reintalling the game over and over until I get lucky to hit the normal checksum? That is a very awful solution. Why did Paradox make it easier to change the checksum in the first place?

From what I remember about EU3 MP that is NOT the only solution...but I forget which is the easy solution...

Don't really know what you meant by that statement but any change to the game files changes the checksum. Its there to tell people that the game is how it should be and doesn't have anything that doesn't work how it works with everybody else. When you reinstall remember to delete everything of the old installation like AndrewT listed. I also would recomend to use some other place to install than program files folder so the windows doesn't cause you problems.

The checksum makes sure you don't have a corrupt installation, and that your MP opponents aren't cheating by editing the game's files. It's not a case of "getting lucky" to hit the right checksum, for 99.9% of people it comes out right first time every time. You happen to be the 0.1% who are having an ongoing problem, which we're happy to help diagnose for you.

I would uninstall and delete again, but this time download a fresh copy of the game from GamersGate AND a fresh copy of the 1.05c patch. Before you install them, disable any anti-virus app you have running (just for the duration) in case it's interfering with the installation process.

Reinstalled to a different location, worked like a charm now. Thank you for the patience and help, me and my bud had a great time starting as Dukes in HRE and getting the Emperor seat and half of Europe under our loving feet...

But I have a question: So basically every change I make to a game file I will change my checksum? Like adding an event or anything like that? So in order to put the changes I want into the game I have to make a mod, so the files I change will not affect them main game and its checksum?

If you do a mod you have the original game still to use and so you can play your mod and play online with your friends with the original version. Still if you want to use your mod on an online game both you and the others in the game need your mod to be able to play. Mod will have its own checksum.

I also add this its always better to install games to other locations than Program Files folder it usually just causes problems.

Using mods also changes the checksum.
Only when you play with the mod active, it does not change the checksum of the unmodded game.
