I will update soon

Part I brief history of Magyars/Hungarians

Origin of the magyars

In 895/896, probably under the leadership of Árpád, some Magyars crossed the Carpathians and entered the Carpathian Basin. The tribe called Magyars was the leading tribe of the Magyar alliance that conquered the Hungarian Basin. The nomadic peoples known as Magyars to the Western part of Europe came from the Eurasian plains, to settle in the Hungarian Plains in 896 ad,where they raided large parts of Europe, including Germany Italy and even parts of France. The reason why these sometimes unorganized tribes just could pillage as they wanted was their expertice in horseriding. The Magyars did also "sell" themselves as merceneries to the Bohemian crown. Eventually the Magyars was defeated at Lechfeld in 955 wich made the Magyar tribe leaders hungry for land to settle in and call their own. In 977 missionaries from Regensburg Converted the Magyar people, know known as Hungarians, to the catholic faith, and the first Hungarian christian king, Stephan the first, was crowned king of the Hungarian Kingdom.

Medieval Hungary

The Kingdom of Hungary was established in 1000 by King Saint Stephen. Originally named Vajk, Stephen was a direct descendant of Árpád, and was baptised as a child.St. Stephen I received his crown from Pope Silvester II in 1000. As a Christian king, he established the Hungarian Church with ten dioceses and the royal administration of the country that was divided into counties

THE EASTERN CRUSADES

Geza Arpad Duke of Slovakia and heir to the Hungarian throne
GezaArpad.jpg

Geza Arpad, 26 years old Duke of Slovakia and count of Trencin, One of the most powerful in the kingdom of Hungary, at least the Northern parts. He was nr 1 in line of sucession of the Hungarian throne, and of course he wanted it badly but he was a chivalric man, even as he was descendant of the fierce magyar tribes, he was extremely loyal to his liege.

The first deeds of Geza was to form the Magyar wild riders into heavy cavalry known as knights. Instead of their ability to move quickly, the knight would instead be able to punch a whole in the enemy's lines with a massive charge.

In 1068 the Hungarian child king Salamon Árpad wanted to gain more land for the poor Hungarian kingdom, he turned his eyes againstn the Pechenegs, a fierce warrior tribe, whic had settled i Bularia. in 1069 the war broke out, with early hungarian victories over the unorganized barbarians. Geza Árpad travelled swiftly to the eas of the kingdom, to take early gains i Bulgaria. This lead to minor skrimishes where the Hungarian knights, proved more than able for the first time. later that year Geza, together with hus loyal soldiers laid siege to the province of Severin, The barbarian hordes chose to attack the Hungarian duke from behind, but the Hungarian light cavalry rushed against the slow moving barbarians and slew them with arrows and javelins. This was a major victory of the war, were about 2000 barbarians lost their lives, against 900 Hungarian lives.

Meanwhile the county of Bihar was under siege by foul hearted infidels, the Duke of Slovakia marched together with his armies southward, to relieve the trapped Hungarians, the battle was won without major casualties on either side. The armies of Geza went north, to help their king in Szekelyföld, where he battled the leader of the Pechenegs and his barbarian soldiers. The battle was eventually won, and Geza was made a national hero, the Pechenegs was defeated once and for all, but with hard losses to, Geza was badly wounded and died after 6 months with several disseases

-Deeds of Geza Àrpad: Forming Hungarian army from Magyar to Feudal night order, Gain of southern land through conquest

GezaArpad.jpg

A new Duke was announced, Kalman Árpad, only 10 years old and new grand duke of Slovakia. The Hungarian king wanted more land, after his victory against the Pechenegs. In 1071 the kingdom of Hungary attacked the Cuman horde, a wise decision the king thought, but this war would have dire consequences for Hungary. The first part of the war wnt good, the kingdom of Hungary won many great battles against the Hordes, but the longer the war took, the less soldiers the king had to fight for him. The war escalated when a major Hungarian troop consentration was ambushed by hordes of Cumans, at least 3000 Hungarian soldiers lost their lives in the woods of Marmaros.

The situation in the Cuman crusade
badsituatin.jpg

The crusade itself had halted, it was now turned into a state of survival for the Hungarian kingdom. The hordes of the Cuman kept invading the crown lands of Hungary. The war was looking grim, especially for the Grand duchy of Slovakia. All of the duchies southern pagan provinces was conquered by the Cumans and after that the greedy bishop of Pressburg took them and made them his personal domain. The only 11 year old Grand duke, Kalman Árpàd had some serious troubles, such as untrustworthy vassals and unhappy peasants. The Duchy of Slovakias position was getting even worse, when the dukes vassal armies lost in a embarrasing skirmish, where 2000 hungarian noble knights fought 1200 Cuman Cavalry, the battle ended as a massacre with over 1700 hungarians slain, and only 600 Cumans slain. The Duke thought About returning to the old way Magyar mounted cavalry instead of heavy knights, but his vassals would not hear any of it. But somehow, maybe with the help of god, the Hungarian king fought back the infidels, winning only few territories from the, the Polish kingdom though, won large areas in southern Russia. Actually some Hungarian nobles saw the Polish kingdom as their mutual enemy, as the polish had got large gains, at the expensce of Hungarian lives, this would affect the future in a large grade.

Regional powers after the great crusade ended, note that the polish has gotten two northern former hungarian provinces
Regionalpowers.jpg

After the great crusade ended the Grand duke of Slovakia was in a large debt: he owed 260 ducats away which is much for such small duchy, and because of the uncessfull crusade, the Duke had lost all of his southern provinces to, as mentioned above.

In the year of 1086 the Hungarian king Salamon wanted to extend his Kingdom further south, it was agreed with the Duke og Slovakia, that he was to receive large gains of land, to comepnsate for the territory lost during the Eastern crusade. Money was gathered to found the armies, and vassals was told of the riches awating them. The fist of the Hungarian-Magyar army was to be thrown in the face of the principiality of Kiev this time, a large and rich principiality, sometimes seen as true home of the Magyars, as it was originaly here their roots was.

I would be happy if any of you readers would comment this, is it toally crap? should i include more history, more RPG? more text? more pictures?

fewer of the above?

thank you this will help me with writing more AAR's in the future ;)

It's a good AAR. Really, it is - attractive, screenies, good writing. I just can't get too juiced about Hungary. And one of your goals is to make Hungary into a great power. . . well, done before you even started.

Perhaps develop an interesting goal, or an interesting approach to Hungary? With so many Hungarian AARs with Hungary conquering all and sundry, something to make you really stand out - apart from the good quality you're already displaying - would go far.

'Course, that's just my opinion and I often go against the grain, as it were.

I agree with what phargle said - try to develop an interesting goal rather than just "become a great power". Maybe try to add some handicaps, perhaps dependent on the traits and statistics of your ruler and his advisors? As an example, if your ruler is zealous, you may go on crusading in any direction, but if he is trusting, he would probably try to go for peace deals as soon as possible as well as grant counties and duchies to everyone in the court just to appease them. Mind you, these are just examples - I'm sure you can think of many more ways to spice up the AAR.

Another solution is that we're totally wrong. I mean, your AAR is well-designed and has great pictures. Post a few more updates so people can get into the backstory and the characters, and see if you pick up readers. I mean, you've got almost 100 views for just 1 post by you. That's pretty good. :)

Thank you phargle, again i guess it keeps up my morale ;)

btw i think it will take some time before i can update again as i have oral exams at the moment, and i have to look through all of my notes : s

I like text/pictures ratio and quality. If it wouldn`t be another WorldConquest Hungarian AAR, then it will be interesting to follow. Count me as subscribed. :)

Hehe it wont, i will try to play this rather relistic, i will not be turbo anexing any states. And i wont only focus on military expansion, personally i like AAR's where it is not only about anexing the most nations, but instead try to create a feeling of the social and technologicaly advances of the nation...

update is coming soon

And this a good thing. Usually, CK is quite easy to deal with if you only want to conquer as much as possible, so adding realism and roleplay elements to the AAR is most often a good idea.

Good luck with your exams :)

PART II REGAINING OF THE HOMELAND

Origin of the Magyar tribes
magyasr.jpg

The Hungarian king Salamon Àrpàd had agreed with his vassals, a war against the rich eastern principiality of Kiev. These rich provinces would be a fine addition to the growing Hungarian kingdom. Salamon Àrpád had also finally found out of the importance to make stronger vassals to balance the power of the Archbishopric of Pressburg, wich basically dominated all of southern Hungary. Small raids was organized into the Kievan principiality, which eventually lead to the prince of Kiev to declare the kingdom of Hungary war.

The principiality declared war, after minor skirmishes between Magyar cavalry and Rus merchants
Kievkrig.jpg

The Kingdom of Hungary did not fear any major battles at this time, because this time the newly created Hussar's would support the heavier Hungarian knights. In late 1086 an epic battle was fought, between 4000 Hungarians and 5200 Kievean Rus. The battle was fought 20 miles away from the town of Torki. It was a pure massacre, the Hungarians slaughtered many Kievans during this battle under the leadership of Kalman the Great, which he was known as after the battle. The forces if Kiev was in dissaray, and the Hungarians made their way north where they besieged the city of Terebovl. The war enden quickly after, with gains to the Grand Duchy of Slovakia. Not only was the King and Dukes pleased, but also the Hungarian population was happy with such a glorius victory. Certainly the Kingdom had never been as rich as it was now, and the population was extremely content with the situation

one of the greatest battles of Hungarian history

The Grand duke was indeed happy that he came up with the idea of a corps of elite light cavalry knows as Hussars to back up the heavier knights, as they surely had turned the tide of war for Hungary. The Hussar corps was now the envy of any other feudal nation.

The royal Hussars, the pride of feudal Hungary

Hungarianhussars.jpg

By january 1087 the Grand duke of Slovakia and his vassals made attempts to covert the heathesn of the newly aquired Rus territory, this lead to several revolts of the population and the Grand duke had to send in his armies to fight them back. The Grand duke promised that if any of the Rus territory would rebel again, he would let them be killed on a stake. The revolts kept coming over and over again and soon the grand duke had to do something, if he wanted to have peace. He chose to let some of the heathens be spiked on long pikes, while they were still alive.

Truly a brutal punishent of the heathens by the Hungarians
Spilsofwrar-1.jpg

Large parts of the original homeland was now under control, but the Hungarian dukes, under leadership of Kalman the great was not happy with their king, as he continued to be an ally of Poland, even though the Poles had acquired bot Rus lands and also Hungarian lands at the expensce of Hungarian lives, in the Eastern crusade.

thank you Legolas it is quite a pleasure for me to write this AAR

Erhm guess it was Megos Alexandros aka Alexander the great destryoing the Persian army at some town :p

Kiev is just unreasonably weak in all these scenarios. But well done - the steppes are your strength, but expanding across them will make you get borders with the Mongols and the Turc tribes.

Best of luck.

I like your pictures quite a bit, well developed. You've built a very solid Hungary.

Good work with the AAR so far. I just finished a Hungarian CK AAR, as the younger brother of the guy you're starting with (Count of Bihar), so it's doubly interesting to me to see another approach to a similar situation.
