I seriously just want to enjoy this game, but whenever this event fires I get a CTD. I've tried setting it to 'Below Normal' speed like someone else suggested but the issue repeats itself. Is there a fix for this?

Is fixed in the patch which is up to come....
In the meantime you can load as Shanxi once they are at war with Nat.China...disband all their tropps....then save and load as Nat.China...make a fast cakewalk to the necessary provinces to annex...then manually annex Shanxi...save game and load again as the nation you where playin...you loose a week or so...maybe you have to do some readjustments cause the AI may have changed something in your country setting but at least you can go on playin....
