New player questions. I just started a game as the King of Poland. He starts unmarried, and I'm thinking that it is a good idea to get him married ASAP so that he can have as many kids as possible. That being said, I feel that as a king I should be marrying the daughters of other Kings in Europe, but from my limited searching there don't really seem to be any available. Anyways, the point is, what should I look for in choosing a wife? Are stats important, what about prestige and wealth? is lineage important to consider? Or is there something else I'm missing entirely? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In DV (the expansion) stats don't matter much unless you are planning to use her directly as an adviser. Wealth is nice, as it will eventually be inherited by her oldest son (who usually is your heir as well). Lineage is important solely for role playing reasons. Although I think you get more prestige from marrying women higher up the social scale, but I'm not sure of that.

Another thing to look for is the number of her siblings. If it is low, could your heir inherit something from her father...if none of her brothers or elder sister's sons remain. Be careful with this though as it could result in your family having poor fertility if done enough. The other reason you would want to look at this, would be if her family had a lot of children, then she will probably too. More children mean more security for your dynasty.

FYI: if you're playing 1066 some of King William's daughters will be coming of age in a few years. Adele and the one a year older than her seem to make good brides in my experience.

if you expect to have kids with her keep an eye on her age : <30 yo is good
illnesses and stress affect fertility too (a depressed girl will is sterile)

Thanks for the replies.
So what I'm hearing is that you want a young bride with a fertile family and if she happens to have wealth that's good too. On the other hand, while it is nice to marry the daughter of the King of England she really is no better for a wife than an equally fertile courtier of some unknown county in the forgotten regions of Germany? Is this true, it seems a little counter intuitive to me that it would be. And do I look for the same things when marrying my sons and daughters, or should I have more of a focus on potential inheritances? And one last thing, if I do marry the daughter of the King of England does that in any way improve my diplomatic ties with them?

My line of Croatia has been getting lucky. I married one guy to the daughter of the King of France, when both she and my king were 16. She died when she was 22, and I replaced her with an Armenian, not as cool.

Another king got married to the sister of the King of Germany.

Usually when I start out I go by this criteria for finding mates,

Primary Criteria
- Age must be under 20.
- Must have lustful trait and/or other traits that increase chances of having kids.

Secondary Criteria
- Must have at least a single high stat, I usually use her as an adviser.

Usually my first concern is to establish a healthy family base, encase I have future problems with heirs dying I have several backups.

Depends on your aims:

1. number of heirs
- young (preferably less then 20)
- lots of siblings (high fertility is likely)
- no stress/depression
- lustful preferred

2. needed to fill a court position
- high relevant stat

3. to raise funds (via 'royal marriage aid duty)
- preferably 60+
- sickness, pneumonia, stress preferred :D
(to marry again soon)

4. possible inheritance
- look for free daughters or granddaughters of current ruler

5. improving genes (in CK 1.05)
- high unmodified stats matter (without personality trait modifiers and education modifiers)

Yep ... start by finding a young and lustful bride :)

Kids are the most important at the beginning. Ofcourse feel free to check for stats also. But if you are a King, you probably have an able court already.

When i play smaller realms, I usually go for a good steward, as I want to make some money early on, and I rarely seem to get one randomly allocated to my court.

If you look for someone to take an advisor position, try to make sure her traits are compatible with yours. there is nothing worse than having a disloyal advisor. Especially if you have no alternatives.

Yup, as young as possible and lusty. And if is she is indulgent too, then even better. But if things don't work out, you can always follow the example of good old King Henry and "divorce" her if you meet somebody who is lustier and prettier than her.

Just be aware that "offing" the wifey is a biiiiig no no, so if you get caught, you'll get 'Kinslayer' trait which is nasty, and will most likely lose you more than just the wife.

It's not a big no no when you're roleplaying as the dreaded hunchback count of Vladimir Volinski. So while playing as a king of large realm I wouldn't risk getting the "Kinslayer" trait and risk instability and losing courtiers or vassals. But when you start small, some fun roleplaying doesn't hurt so as a lowly count I'm all for taking big risks :D . And if that 30-year infertile hag is giving me no loving or I suspect that she is secretly shagging my bastard son Igor (not a hunchback  ) while I'm away at war, her head will certainly roll. Umm, writing this makes me want to start my very first Ukrainian AAR.

Young and lusty.

Wow, that is a radical idea; you guys are crazy :D:rofl:

Young and lusty...meh. You can't beat experience; give old and saggy a try hehehe. ;)

Nah, I think I'll go for the young and lusty, small. With fries and perky teets. :D

If we're talking about traits of women that men find attractive then wide hips and big breasts will always be prevalent. Its a genetic thing that all men have, so in the back of your mind you think that a woman with these traits would make a better mother to your children, and thus carry on your gene pool. Whether changes in culture can alter what our genes make us want as a base instinct is open to debate.

But i'll leave you with this; appartently in medieval times, a woman with big hands was sought after as it was believed she would be more capable with housework. Give me dark hair, sexy eyes, and a nice pair of legs any day. ;)

"Big hands!?"

My God its like looking back at an different planet rather than simply a different era.

I'm really starting to feel like we need some pics in this thread, but since I've already managed to get it way off topic don't want to either incur the wrath of either OP or mods :p

Very elegant and alluring. But if you were thinking more along the lines of "lusty," brazen, and back-door . . .
