If a civil war erupts, say FE when no legitimate heir is present, will you be able to choose sides? Any other times you can?

How will Civil Wars be modelled?
One way is that two families or heirs have legitimate claims on a throne (or fabricated ones, really, as "legitimate" claims usually were) and that you have to raise an army and win support.
Promise your supporters the positions of every official from the other side they kill to win their loyalty.
That's how the Norwegian master of Civil War, King Sverre Sigurdsson, won the war and established one of the more centralised medieval states in Northern Europe.

In just guessing, I would think that they would be handled like the War of the Roses Events in EU2.

Please, please don't do it that way! Please?![]()

I doubt it will happen that way; AS far as I know the event sysrtem will be more advanced than in EU II, which should make it possible for more advanced events.
Or it could happen the way the Spanish civil war happens in HoI.
The country is split down the middle, and each faction has claims on the entire 'country'

Yeah, with the dukes and lords all supporting one faction or another, you're racing against the other claiment to gain the support of as many of the the dukes as possible so you can become king.

I'm imagining situations like e.g. that between Tancred of Lecce and Henry VI over the Sicilian throne 1189-1197... The bastard son with support from the Nobles v.s. the foreigner married to the sister (and de facto heir).Originally posted by Greven
To clear things out...There will always be legitime heirs, though their claims may have different strength depending of the inheritance system in you realm and who gave birth to them.
It would be possible to choose whom to support yes and anything from a fast crush down on armed pretendents to a full fledging civil war is possible.
