One line summary of your issue
3.1.1 - Game crashes to desktop during initial loading screen

Game Version
3.1.1 (WQTI)

What expansions do you have installed?

The Reapers Due,
Way of Life,
Charlemagne,
Sons of Abraham,
The Old Gods,
Legacy of Rome,
Sword of Islam,
Holy Fury

Do you have mods enabled?
No

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
CK2 crashes to the desktop during the initial loading screen, and always does so during the "Loading Graphics" portion of the process. I've tried re-installing, verifying the game files, and disabling all DLC, but nothing has solved the issue yet.

Steps to reproduce the issue.
For me, simply starting the game causes this issue.

Has the crash generated any dump file?
Please attach it to this thread if that is the case.

Dump files are placed under C:users/<username>/documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/dumps

I'm having a similar issue. Something definitely broke with the new update because rolling back a patch fixes it. Dumps are attached to my post.

OK, so you both indeed seem to be suffering from the same crash.
My suspicion is that your antivirus software is getting angry when we write files to the C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II directory.
When loading graphics, we save a texture of all the flags in the game to the /gfx subdirectory for optimization purposes. My guess is that this triggers heuristics of your AV.

Could you try disabling the antivirus or making an exception for CK2 and then starting the game again?
If that doesn't solve the issue, please make a zip of the logs folder as well (Realize now that I should have asked for that along with the dumps).

Your assumption was correct, the issue was with avast and the exception I thought I made earlier was in fact not an exception at all. Still though, it seems a bit strange that this patch would suddenly be a problem when previous versions of the game run just fine. In case there is a desire to further investigate the issue I've posted logs from before I applied the fix.

Thank you!
It has been happening for several patches now and usually sorts itself out after a couple of days when the anti virus programs figure out that it's nothing malicious.
