Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
I wanted to create vassal merchant republic because everyone said it will provide great boost for my kingdom of Ireland.

However, when I tried to build the trade post it said I can’t because there is no trade zone. At first, I thought the grand doge needed time to build trade zone but even after waiting 10 years, it keeps telling me I can’t build it.
Am I missing something here? Plz help

Steps to reproduce the issue.
1. Became the feudal king of Ireland
2. Made the cities in duchy of connacht as the capital holdings of their respective counties, creating doges.
3. Gave the title of duchy of connacht to one of the doges, creating the merchant republic, and patrician families are formed.
4. Tried to build trade post but it said I can’t because there is no trade zone.
5. waited 10 years but still no trade zone so no trade post for me. All it gave me was fewer, weaker levies and -20 opinion for wrong type of government.

If you're still playing as the feudal king, then you can't build trade posts except on the Silk Road or whatever the trade route in Africa is called. Your vassal MR patrician families should be building their own trade posts without you needing to do anything, if they have enough money and tech. Look in the Trade Zone map view for an idea of where they're building theirs.

problem solved- but then what is the point of having MR?
From what I read, having MR vassals is supposed to give huge boost for your realm in terms of lots of income and prosperity.

However, from what I can see, my income actually got lowered because the mayors pay their taxes to the MR duke, not directly to me.

As a result, my realm just got weaker and my relationship with vassals are worsened because now I have lower income and levies and because I have wrong type of government.

After many save and reloads, I am certain that I am actually better off without having MR.

So if this is the case, why did everyone keep telling me every realm should have at least one MR vassal? Am I missing something here, or was it a bad joke?

A vassal MR does two things. First, while they give less taxes, they give lots of ships. A vassal MR that likes you at least a little will give you more ships than a duke who likes you a lot. Second, while they pay less taxes to you than a mayor holding that slot would, the trade posts they build increase the taxes your other mayors pay (up to a possible +100%). If they have a large trade zone that includes your desmense counties, you get more tax from those mayors.

That being said, it is possible you are either too small a realm to benefit from a merchant republic or you didn't wait long enough for them to make your realm stronger.

Basically this. At first the MR tends to pay less taxes, then as it grows the amount they pay grows. If you have maximized taxes for them in your Obligations laws and they have grown powerful trade-wise they can be a major cash cow. :)
