Was this game first started before 3.0 was released?

Saves aren't generally transferable between major versions and 3.0 was a big one.
The problem is likely that one of the vassals on the winning side of the crusade owns a wasteland.
Between now and the version you started in, a province has been changed from being a normal province to being a wasteland and due to this, there is an owner of that wasteland in your save data. Wastelands should never be owned by someone and therefore this causes a crash.

Despite this save game transfer not being supported, I have made a fix for this particular crash for the upcoming patch.
But it's unfortunately quite likely that more issues will appear even if you make it past this crash as the save data is in an odd state due to the transfer.

You did some digging yourself so I felt that an answer on what is actually going on was in place =)
Bug reports are really valuable and when the author does some background work for us it saves us time, so thank you! (Even though I already kind of had the answer for this one, not easy for you to know).

Monzun, is there a way for me to edit my save file to change a vassal's stats? I'd have to do a search, as my Roman Empire is quite vast, hah.
I don't know if it's possible but if you want to try; the wasteland that was problematic in the save I investigated was Kara-Kum.
There may very well be more problems than this one though and that region might be named differently in your save since the regions have been changed.
Just remember to backup your save in case something goes wrong :)

Also, if you want to tag someone, you need to put an @ before their name or else they won't get a notification(I have a watch on this thread and therefore I saw it anyway).
