Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
My royal marriage and alliance was brought to an abrupt end as my firstborn daughter was killed when when they got occupied by a revolt. Her husband and the lynchpin of the alliance was imprisoned - and i was unable to re-establish the alliance due to him being imprisoned.

I have been waiting a long time for this imprisonment to be lifted and it was to my shock that somehow he was able to be the subject of a betrothal from another NPC/AI

No, just inconsistent mechanics being applied. Its either a bug or it makes no sense whatsoever.

Prince Sigrid Halfdansson of the danelaw was the marriage target.
