Worked fine before the new update came out. Bought Charlemagne, booted up the game. Start-up music plays for 1-2 seconds before it freezes and an error message with "CK2 has stopped working" pops up. No mods installed. Have tried to reinstall the game, same result.

Try deleting the ../Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II -folder and starting the game again..
You need to backup any local save files you want to keep before deleting the folder! Also all settings will reset.

It won't allow me to delete it, says the file/folder is open in another application. But I do not have it open in any other application (that I am aware of) and Steam is turned off.
Could you try restarting your system and then delete the file before having started the game?
