It's been happening since I bought a new PC with Windows 11. I've done a clean reinstall, removed all the mods, switched to Vulkan, and changed the properties of the .exe file — all for nought. I'm at a loss here.

Display Tab 4: There is a problem with AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics device. For more information, search for 'graphics device driver error code 22'
While nothing to do with this problem,. you are missing a driver for this device which will affect using non-game apps.

As to your issue, I see you have Windows 11 24H2; this can be the cause of this problem, it seems to affect this game particularly for some reason.

it is a severely broken Windows update that has caused problems across the whole gaming - indeed computer - industry.

A user has come up with another possible workaround
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/24h2-w11-update-issue-found-no-more-crashes.1728373/
Some affected users have definitely seen that help them with this issue. I'd suggest you look at this step first!

And, switch the game's renderer to Vulkan on the launcher-game settings tab.

The CK3 devs are aware of the issue of course, but I don't know whether it is thought possible to change the game to work around the Windows 11 bugs.

Sorry about that!

I followed everything in that thread, but the game crashed nontheless. I don't know if anything looks different in the logs... Do I just wait until Paradox fixes this?

Do I just wait until Paradox fixes this?
The fact they haven't been able to deal with it in the months since that Windows version was released, does make it look like it is not possible. MS have made several attempts to fix it with mixed results, but do make sure you have applied all available Win11 updates.

Did you try using Vulkan as your renderer? That has a pretty good record of success with Win11 24H2 issues.

I got the same issue. I will try Vulkan.

This issue has been over a year, still no fix.... if the fix is to wait that Microsoft is going to change something, i wouldnt hold my breath.
I bought the Nomad expansion on Xbox gamepass, hoped that SOMETHING would have been done about this, nope, still same.
I refunded, I hope I get my money back.

Yeah, still no luck unfortunately
Is it just the game that is crashing, not the whole PC? Because the latter is the more usual symptom caused by Win11 24H2. If it is just the game, perhaps you have an unrelated issue.

That said there's no mention of the game crashing in that dxdiag! Can I get new copies of all those files in your OP here please.

And Please install and run the free utility Speccy. Send its output to a text file and attach that here please.
https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download

And finally, go into your Windows Event Viewer and look at the time of the latest game crash. Are there any ERROR or WARNING errors in the few minutes leading up to that crash?

Yes, it's always the game that crashes.

And finally, go into your Windows Event Viewer and look at the time of the latest game crash. Are there any ERROR or WARNING errors in the few minutes leading up to that crash?
About 5 minutes before the crash, there were 4 errors saying:
Unable to start DCOM server: {94269C4E-071A-4116-90E6-52E557067E4E}. Error:
2147942402
The error occurred while running the command:
"C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\25.085.0504.0002\FileCoAuth.exe" -Embedding

One saying:
The “PerfDiag Logger” session was stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188

And one warning saying:
The maximum size of the “PerfDiag Logger” session file has been reached.
Because of this, events may have been lost (unregistered) in the file:
"„C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownPerfDiagLogger.etl".
The maximum file size is currently 20971520 B.

(I translated them because they were originally in Polish)

DCOM errors are normal in WEV, they will be nothing to do with your problem.

I hadn't seen that other PerfDiag logger error before, but googling it shows it is cosmetic too. So no clues there unfortunately!

We do see two failed Windows 11 24H2 updates in that Speccy file (KB5044284 and KB5058411); given that versions problems that's not good! Quite how to fix that I'm not sure, but do look into getting those updates installed.

I see there is still no driver installed for the integrated AMD video system, I do think you should address that.

You may as well update that Nvidia driver to mid-May 2025 https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
If GeForce Experience or the Nvidia app are running after doing that, exit them before starting the game.

That dxdiag shows no crashes in this game, but repeated crashes in KSP and MS Flight Simulator.

If none of that helps, Make a new Windows user profile on this PC. Log into that and go into Startup Apps and disable everything, and reboot. Then try this game under that profile; any better?

Maybe a stupid question, but why would I exactly need to have the integrated graphics turned on if I have a GPU?
It runs apps that don't need a full GPU, such as the Windows desktop and browsers, etc. That saves battery life and reduces operating temperatures.

I've installed both drivers, it still crashes.

Did you also look into these two items?

Okay so I think I downloaded these updates and so far I haven't had any crashes. I'll start a new save and play for a bit to ensure if it really did fix the issue.
unfortunately, it still crashed after about 30 minutes...

Okay, I'm going to guess now this really is the Windows 11 24H2 issue, even though your symptoms are different to other users.

Did you try these things?

Definitely worth a shot - let me know if that does help you! Note that to test it you don't actually need to use Processor Lasoo, just Affinity in Task Manager (for testing purposes anyway).

Hello!

I'm experiencing the same issue, and I'm on Windows 10. :(

The crashes started a few weeks ago — initially after around 3 hours of gameplay.

Then it began crashing after 2 hours, then sooner each time. Now, I can't even play for 15 minutes before it freezes and crashes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Then you will have a different cause. Always best in future to make your own new thread, not "me too" someone else's - especially when their situation is different.

Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If those don't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.
IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.txt

Tried both, still no luck.

Then perhaps there is some other problem on this PC, although I haven't been able to spot anything yet.

After one of these crashes, can you reload the same save and cary on past the crash point? Or it always crashes as the same spot?

Look in your Windows Event Viewer as the time of the latest crash - any significant ERROR or WARNING entries there?
