That's way too long to be sure. The mods will probably direct you over to the tech support forum here: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forums/crusader-kings-iii-tech-support.1078/

When loading times inflate dramatically for me, it's usually because I have too many save games. Delete what you don't need, keep maybe 10-20 max, and hopefully it improves for you.

Some things I'd recommend:
  • Clean up your downloaded mods folder, especially for large mods you don't use--unsubscribe if you haven't touched that 3gb overhaul and make sure its deleted out of your Steam Workshop Folder. I don't know why, but launching my game without any mods went faster after I removed a bunch of mods I hadn't been using; I swear I went from 10 minutes to 5 on my old HDD. Nowadays, I occasionally delete the entire folder and redownload all of my mods every once in a while.
  • Clear out your old saves/move them to another location for safekeeping. The game still checks all of your saves in the folder , so it'd be better if it wasn't looking at those 1200's savegames you have from 1.3.1 (that you aren't ever going to replay, anyways)
  • A fresh reinstall of the game won't hurt either, it's not that big anyways

Perhaps you have too many mods loading or as others saved maybe you have too many saves stored.

When I have problem loading in CKIII is usually caused by saved games with different playsets than the current one. I solve the issue by moving saved games created with other mods to a different folder, and usually the issue disappears.

I have a pretty good modern gaming PC but it's always taken a while for me. I followed the advice in this thread and cut it down from like 8-10 minutes to around 4-5, which is something, but it's still shocking how long it takes.

It shouldn't take that long, especially not if you cleared all your saves. Do you have any mods? If yes, try to deactivate them all, verify your game files, then try again. If it improves, you'll know that some mods might interfere with your game performance.

Beyond that... you use an SSD, right?

I'm glad you've managed to fix it. Usually having alot of mods installed extremely hinders game speed, and it has nothing to do with your specs most of the time and more to do with how poorly optimised mods are in general.

I load into the map in 2-5 minutes on vanilla, the game runs pretty well without mods.

15-20 mins on modern i9 PC, NVME SSD
Huge amount of disk and network activity each time it starts up to the point of throttling everything else.
No mods, not even all DLC. Started like that from scratch, so no savegames present.
Game randomly looses Council NPCs (even if they don't die) and after clickingon (+) in their place crashes.

I feel there is something that interferes then with your game.
Maybe anti virus? Or video card drivers?

No , video drivers are up-to-date.

Antivirus yes, apparently. Not in way that can be excluded. It appears that format how game files stored loosely and what they are what's it's done. Every file and every action on it is scanned, according to AV log (at least thisis an expensiveone which registers that it starts to investigate). It's similar to how antiviruses nearly disable git cache process - huge amount of too little files (git uses 0-byte files as semaphores, AVs stumble on these for incredible amount of time) - disk caching doesn't help. That's 60% of performance loss

AV off - 60% speed gain.
Windows filewall for some reason - too adds somtime. Could storage is off.
Browser antivirus off - 7% speed gain. Game uses chromium or somethign similar to browser somewhere?
Other part is odd. Seems disk reding is unoptimized. Game ues only about 10/15% of possible bandswidth.

It's 12-13 minutes after Av off. 20+ minutes if AV is on.

Antivirus is Kaspersky Standard, just for statistics (includes firewalland browser\mail modules). It knows to actually go into "Game mode" when a steam app is launching a game, for game's process. But thing is.. Ck3 somehow cheats its way and works outside of Steam context or something and isn't full screen, only pretends as such - therefore "game mode" isn't engaged.

Mine only ever takes more than a minute or two if it's the first time I'm starting after a major update.

My computer is closing in on being 15 years old.
I have swapped out any non SSD drives with SSD's since then.
And went through multiple graphics cards.

Always had the same 16 gb of RAM.
But I think, my CPU is the bottle neck now and possibly motherboard.
I can't update to Win 11...

Really should look for a new one.
Stellaris also takes some time to load, not as much as Ck3 but still.

And I have 2022 PC with 64 Gb of RAM. And still got from 20 to 30 mins load times.

Digging on info how Ck3 is modded, how savegame is structered... We literally are waiting until every reasource in whole map sim is loaded. It's some kind of HLa-based simulator or something similar.. all source data is zipped text in very loose format (similar to what many simulators using this technology use) and archieved textures. This is alot of potential cache misses. The mount of data game should load is roughly 5Gb but it does it at average speed of 100-250kbit/s, yet disk activity in performance monitor shows it can peak 3Gbit/s, while it loads and loads and loads from same files repeatedly (a siganture of of some virtual filesystem using libgz?).

I'm also curious what's going on during the long load times.

Loading from an HDD, haven't tested with SSD yet.

I can't seem to post links but devs have done some writups on this "Anatomy of a Game: Startup and loading"
And "PhysFS performance, a story of threading and locking"

You're right there is a virtual filesystem layer (PhysFS)
