So, after the 3.3.1 update, I was having the graphical issues that some users were having. So I decided to do a clean reinstall. Now the game launcher crashes whenever I press "Play" on Steam. By clean reinstall, I mean I have:

  1. Uninstalled Crusader Kings II via Steam.
  2. Deleted any remaining files in the install directory.
  3. Deleted the entire Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II folder
  4. Installed Crusader Kings II
  5. Verified the files via steam.
  6. Allowed CK2game.exe in my Windows Defender ransomware protection settings.
Also, I noticed when I try to launch the game, only a few of the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II files are being generated. Attached is a zip of my Documents/.../Crusader Kings II folder, my dxdiag file, and some log files.

I am at a loss. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Is there no Documents/paradox/ck2/settings.txt file?

If there is, edit it to say:
fullScreen=no
borderless=yes

There was no settings file, but I was able to paste one in from my backups. I made the edit suggested, but the launcher still crashes upon opening it via Steam.

If the game doesn't make a settings.txt , whatever causes that will not be fixed by making one yourself.

Place the attached file in the same folder as ck2game.exe . It tells the game to write settings.txt and other user files right ther einstead of under Documents/Paradox/CK2. Does that help at all?

I see, that's pretty serious, and unexpected in fact. Making that folder and file is almost the first thing the game does.

If you revert to an earlier version, say 3.3.0, does that work like it used to? Or also have the same issue?

Okay then, your issue is not caused by the game update but some other change or update to your computer or Windows.

If you have installed RivaTuner, RadeonPro, or a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, or Duet, disable it as it clashes with this game.

And the crashes in the end of that dxdiag mention your nVidia driver.
In your Steam Library right-click on this game and choose Properties. Click on Set Launch Options, and paste this in there:
-opengl

If that allows you to start the game, then the issue is in the video area, probably that driver. Let us know!

I wasn't aware of that being a general problem with thei rlatest, I will have to keep an eye out for that.

You may want to report that to nVidia, too.

All the best!

Hijacking this thread a bit, this worked for me.

I had issues launching the game as well.
The launcher was fine, I got through that.
But then it seems to "launch" properly and runs in the background - I hear the intro music.
Interestingly, Stellaris had the same issue and fixed with the exact same edit.

Thank you, I came here looking for a fix to the same problem as OP, and this fixed it for me.

Then you have a different issue than them, as that did not help them. As that helped you, you will have an antivirus app preventing ck2game.exe from writing to the User Documents folders, OR the Windows Documents folders have been moved and the game cannot find them.

Yeah I had a few tabs open and lost track of what the OP was about specifically.

For posterity, in case anyone else is troubleshooting their own problem: I would hit Play on Steam, the launcher would come up as a white screen, then a "CK2 has stopped working" would pop up. Sometimes the same would happen but accompanied by an error about referencing an invalid memory point or something.

I'm not sure what the cause of my problem was. Maybe it didn't help that the documents folder and the game folder were on different drives, idk.

Update- the game worked from Friday through Sunday then it started crashing again.

What is going on that this is the case?

I really can't play if I had to do a hard reinstall every other day!

Try and narrow down what part of the reinstall is actually helping. Delete just the documents/paradox/ck2/gfx/ folder for instance.

If that doesn't help, then all of the documents/paradox/ck2/ folder.

It appears to be directly linked to my save games folder- I deleted the whole paradox folder without reinstalling and it worked.

Then I tried to drop my saved game back into the folder while CK2 was open and it crashed.

Tried to reopen with the folder added, did the not loading thing.

Moved the saved games folder to my desktop- crashed.

This is a serious problem- obviously you can't play CK2 without saving and coming back to the same game!

Okay then, you must have one or more corrupted saved games. Move them all out and confirm the game starts okay, then move them back one by one to see which are bad.
