Had a run in with a gnome (those level 2 semi passive critters) and I thought "Hey - My leader is level 10 and has a sword. Lets see if he can't beat up that little critter". To which the answer was "Nope" - he just ignores the gnome or flees.

So if he doesn't defend himself or attack, why does he even carry a sword? Ceremonial? Or am I missing something here?

Do you have the first Warrior Influence branch bonus? I think the leader uses the "worker" non-aggressive AI without that trait active. I know for certain in my playthrough with that trait chosen, he stomps around kicking butt with the rest of the military dwarves.

Interesting - Is this in research or under the influence system? :)

I think I'd rather him be a coward... If the price dies, then it's game over right? I can't count the number of soldiers I've thrown at a level 30 to get it down. Once it took something like 34-ish warriors. I honestly don't think I want my price to be all 'gun-ho' and aggros to everything it sees.

In the campaign it's very useful in the beginning stages. Many times your warriors are still level 1-2 and you open a room with 2 or 3 level 7 goblins... that usually meant 'reload game' for me, now the prince takes care of them.

You might want to rethink you strategy then. I normally have at most 10 to 15 Military – but only about 6 to 8 get there before it’s all over – and no issues.
;)

For me, I usually have only had 4 warriors at a time, unless I need some more to defend my prince because the boss it right next door. I prefer them around level 10-15, and then specialize them. 2 fighters, 2 spear throwers --> then one of each again at the next upgrade. So in the end, i have 1 of each type of dwarf, and nothing stops them that I've seen so far.

That is about all you need. I like to spread mine out though. But a Gaurd Post in a few places with 4 or 5 Military at each one. So I tend to get a few more then is truly needed. But it looks cool have all of them walking around.
;)

Yeah, I only keep a few warriors as well, in my case that's usually 5 level 20+ warrior dwarfs + my prince, where two of the five are immortals.
For some odd reason I never upgrade to Immortals. No reason - just habit that I don't pick them.
Next map I think I will make a point of getting a least one of them
:)

Yeah, I was like going all Slayers to begin with, not even ranged units. xD But then I made the realization that A game of Dwarfs military side isn't really about offense, but about defense. So now I keep a guard post entry to my fort that is designed to be very ideal defense position for ranged units and later upgraded with traps (which for the moment are rather useless since at that point I cleaned out most mobs anyway xD), where the immortals and one slayer take care of any monsters from event rooms. - when there's a boss or mini-boss I teleport in my ranged units to back them up.

But yeah, this is mostly about immersion for me, because doesn't seem like there's any need for variation (or traps) on the strategical layer. :/ Looking forward to invasions etc. x3
