I have been playing a campaign and saving automatically to the cloud. I had saved the start of a game (the world-choosing phase) so I could try an approach which didn't work, but when I went to restart, that saved game file was gone. Do auto-saves get over-written eventually - if so, what are the rules? If I do an explicit manual save, is that guaranteed to stay around or might it, too, disappear?

Hi Derbius, the saving behavior depends on the settings that you have active. By default 25 Auto-Saves are stored locally, this number can be increased up to 100 or decreased to 1, once it hits the limit it will remove the oldest auto-save. Auto-Saves as well as quick saves can be stored in the cloud, which happens by default for Manual Saves. Manual Saves don't get deleted unless you do so yourself so those are safe.

There is one type of Auto Save that is remembered which is the Star Map save that takes place after completing a mission and returning to the Star Map. We do filter certain saves based on which screen or mode you are in so that might explain why it was missing.
