Since EvW has fallen out, what is the likelihood of PDS doing their own cold war game?

I am guessing you'll have to wait at least 4-6 years before they will think about making a Cold War era game.

I think this is probably right. PDI works in teams, and EvW wasn't a PDI project. Since they've got Runemaster, EU4, CK2, HoI4, and Victoria 3 definitely sits on the horizon, I'd say that their hands are busy for at least the next two years.

Barring Victoria 3, it'd be about the only game I'd buy from them. EU IV didn't feel like that big of a leap to me, I'm sick of WWII, Runemaster's combat doesn't sound like something I'd want. Maybe a space based game, but that's it. I'd say Rome, but I'm not sure how well that concept could be carried out.

A cold war game would have the potential to mobilize a lot of the existing fanbase, and bring new people on board. It's close enough to the contemporary era that mods to represent out current era could bring a lot of people in, sort of like how the Game of Thrones mod, and even that feel to CK 2 brought a lot of people on board. I really think Paradox is missing something here.

Johan has said in the past he'll never do a "modern era" game. Not sure exactly when that time frame starts, in his opinion, but there it is for you.

Well there is project Augustus which isnt yet announced. But if they canceled EvsW to make their own Cold War game, i am not buying it anyway, because that is just bad.

Yeah, I was surprised they went for WWII again. I mean, CKII was/is a huge hit, EU4 had the converter to piggyback on the success of that hit... but HoI is just one war done in isolation from everything else. It doesn't have the broad sweep of the other titles, and I can't see it garnering a huge new fanbase either, though I could be wrong.

They could have reworked their traditional title ordering a bit. Personally I would have thought the biggest draw, based on past successes, would be:

1750 - 1936: A Vicky-style game (converting from EU4) allowing you to play Revolutionary era as well as industrialization.
WWI to 1991: Short twentieth century, an HoI game with more breadth.

The problem with HOI series is that it's just war, other things are too abstract, even espionage. I really enjoy Vicky 2, it is not just economy, but also politics and diplomacy that made the game stands out. A cold war game would have been something like Vicky 2, but with a much better combat and a very interesting espionage too, that would be a masterpiece of grand strategy game, unlike HOI, more of a grand warfare game.

Let's not judge the book by its cover. HoI4 may be a good enough game, although I think that some of the ideas they just took from a recently cancelled game which should not be named. For example equipment...

Depends. If they did with a pay-off to the EvW team for their input, are you really saying you wouldn't buy it?

Equipment is an idea that's been knocking around on these forums since forever - I remember seeing it being suggested before HOI2.

I would definitely buy a cold war game. Yes most things are already mentioned way before they are put in games. I remember when people wanted the battle planner feature to be followed by the AI and here we are with just exactly that feature. Ship customization was not a unique feature to EvW, it was present in HoI2 Armageddon as well. However many other features were unique to EvW, including the espionage system, and my absolutely favorite that it would make money really useful with many things depending upon it. This I would like to see in HoI4, no more useless money as in HoI3. Of course many ideas were taken from Victoria 2 as well including factories and population. In short it would have been a hybrid of two of my absolute favorite game series HoI and V.

I'd like that as well. The Victoria games were WAY too short. The timeline seriously needs to be extended.

Only, because of the lag because it has to keep track of all the POPs the game runs as long as a game of EU3 or CK2.

If Paradox doesn't want to go beyond the timeline of WWII they could give us Rome 2 we've been asking for a long time now.

Modern era refers to after the cold war.
Modern era is at least the 20th century. Or maybe even around the time when the so called "industrial revolution" began in the 19th century.
