After a while into the game, it gets more and more difficult to colonize. Is there any way to make it easier?

It should get easier and easier. Do you ever get your colonies up to city status, or do you leave them colonies? Having more colonies or trading posts than your monarchs ADM value gives you a penalty on establishing new ones.

1000, I believe. It might be in the 1.09 patch notes.

EDIT: Turns out it was in 1.07.
- Colonial success have now been rebalanced, conquistador bonuses are bigger, early timeperiod gives a penalty, the first attempts gives penalties, the production efficiencies gives bonuses and the number of current colonies gives a penalty. Basically, the ADM value of the monarch affects how many colonies can be maintained at the same time below colonial city status. This is only valid for colonies not attached to the mainland of the nation.
So increasing them to colonial cities (1000) removes the penalty.
