Hi all,

I wanted to try a different start with Russia last night; I wanted to try and get some colonists early and finish colonizing the Russian colonies.

So instead of going after Kazan, I decided to attack The Teutonic Knights. After a quick battle, they pleaded with me to take Ingersmaland (sp?) and Estonia. I did.

Now I expected to go to 3 colonists a year that way, since both Ingers and Estonia have a shipyard. However, I remained at one a year; Hovering over the little ship icon near the top it confirmed that the only colonist I was recieving was for my religion...

Can someone explain what I am missing?

Later,

A shipyard will not give you a colonist. A WHARF will provide you with one colonist for the first wharf you build. You must reach naval tech 16 to build a WHARF. Russia gets 1 colonist for being orthodox with a coastal province. It gets one more colonist if it has one or more wharfs.

Later on russia gets colonial dynamism which will provide russia with up to 4 extra colonists per year.

Personally as sweden I like to prevent russia from taking ingerman land and azov (that is har, but an alliance with crimea usually does the trick).

Shipsyards are the big golden anchors- check Cadiz or Tago how they look like. Estonia and Ingermaland have just normal ports without shipyards.
And you get colonist bonus from your first shipyard- you may have dozen of them, you you still get +1/year.

Ingermanland and Estonia don't have shipyards. They only have harbors (= the grey anchor symbol). Shipyards are big, golden anchors, and only a handful of provinces have them in the beginning (Ragusa, Tago, probably one more in Spain). Once you get your naval tech to level 16, you can build shipyards.

BTW, you only get that an additional colonist for your first shipyard. Additional shipyards do not bring you extra colonists. However, as Russia, you will get colonial dynamism at some point, and you'll probably have more colonists than you can actually afford to use for a long period of time.

I'm in the 1570's with Russia and getting 3-4 colonists a year. I have about a 5 province hole to fill in my link of colonies to the Pacific.

Thanks

Thank you all. I had not realized the difference between the Golden and Grey anchors. I was instead looking at the province display screen and noticing that there was a structure titled "Shipyard/???" ( I forget the ??? part ).

Guess, I will return to perfecting the old method of beating my way to the Sibir... Of course I always end up fighting 35 years wars against the entire east that way....

Actually wouldn't it be the price of wool?

I really think there are much more fur producing provinces in Siberia. And even if there are many wool producing provinces, I think prices of wool are rather low from the start, while prices of fur have quite a lot of room to go down.
