I read a reference on another thread concerning converting to 'Reformed' as France. Why? Because they were tired of only getting a few colonists a year while England was shooting them out at a fast rate.

What a coincidence. I have a very strong (French) economy because I have had one (uno, einz, une, odin) colonist in the past twenty two years (1530 - 1552). OF COURSE you'll invest in infrastructure if you've no colonies to blow money on. Everything I have in the New World was stolen from England. I went to war with England because there was nothing left to do at home: all fortresses were maxed to 'small', all legal council's were promoted, refineries built everywhere. I also stayed Catholic.

Is there REALLY a relationship between colonists and religion (or economy)? Do I have to make life hard for my citizens in order to get them to leave their warm beds and venture into a dark wilderness populated by hostile savages (to die, in the rain)?

Or did I just answer my own question?

Yes, you did :) But don't worry, France will get colonial dynamism was it 1570s to so. Plus, you can always build shipyard once you gain level 16 naval tech and get additional one. Come one, France wasn't much of a colonial power in 1552. Besides, you can always take on the Spanish colonies...

Specific rules

Neither England or France get any colonists until 1560. But, they will get colonists based on religion or the building of a shipyard. They will also get colonists whenever they get a conquistedor or explorer.

Though u get 2 when the first colonial dynamism kicks in and if u have a shipyard, u effectively double those if ur reformed. Or get the extra one while being CR catholic. 3 settlers a year then (1 from CRC, 1 from shipyard, 1 from dynamism), less income but free CBs and no stability loss :D While being reformed has less income, 2 settlers, stability loss and better morale.

I'd prefer protestants: much more income, one colonist, but lousy on stability.

Well, you could always take some of the protestant Germany :) And you probaly get some conversion events sooner or later (if you play with random events on, naturally ;))

And thanks. Decided i needed some change... but i can't find my posts now :D

I appreciate everyone's posts and may just convert to Counter-Reformed to try it out. I did notice that the historical event window said that you can use CRC to force other nations to convert back to Catholicism during peace talks.

A forced conversion would foment post-war rebellion among the enemy nation's provinces, wouldn't it?

Are there any other benefits to forcing a conversion on an enemy (other than the pope putting the prefix 'Saint' before my name)?

I played France, and here is what I did:

First, military expansion in Europe, that extra income of money you get from Flanders is worth it later in the game.

Second, whenever you get the chance, convert to Counter-Reform Catholic. It is worth it. Next, as soon as you can, build a shipyard.

In the meantime, you must not waste your colonist, you only get 1/year until you convert, plus some extras when a conquistador/explorer shows up.

I established a colony in Quebec :) so I could have a port in the New World for later exploration (build a TP first and then send a conquistador). Next, I established a colony near the Spaniards. In the meantime, I use my explorers to discover colonies along the South American Coast and establish a colony near the Inca Empire. Then I allied with them, to prevent the Spanish from taking them. Once the alliance is over, as soon as I have a Conquistador, I annex them to get the gold.

Unlike, historical France, I do care about my colonies :). So I build troops, and sooner or later, England or Spain will dow me, or I will. Then I quickly run over their unprotected colonies (mine have fortresses), wage a few wars in Europe, blah blah blah, and I sign separate peace with all belligerent to get two provinces from each (or annex them if I can). Just remember to burn all Tps before signing peace. It cripples their economy and force them to spend colonists to rebuild tps instead of colonizing/expanding.

By 1753, all of NA is mine and also half of SA and Central America are mine. You get colonial dynamism under Louis XIV (1653-1715) fro the most part and a lot of Conquistadors/Explorers in these times also.

I used my colonist to build one colony in Dakar and a bunch of TPs on the eastern african coast, and a few in Asia/India, but they usually get burned pretty quickly.
