In trading centres some traders loose out on competition and are thrown out in the process. What are the decisive factors here? In the GC I play Austria and with the highest trading level of all players. According to the manual I should beat all others. Unfortunately that does not happen. I get thrown out! What is the clue here?
:)

I guess there's also a relation with cot ownership, in your own cot you'd win when having the highest trade tech.
Actually I find that the AI countries are rather inactive with regard to trading activity in other countries cot's, if they have no trade goods of their provinces traded in that cot.
I'm usually the only european power trying to get a piece of the cake in e.g. the persian cot.

The 'chance' is determined by the trade level. It is not higher trade level always wins.

<start assumption>
The chance that a trader removes another trader is xx percent, perhaps level x 10%.
Which trader is determined by the relative levels of each trader.
Lets assume there is a level 5, level 3 and level 8 trader in the COT and a level 4 trader enters:
Then the chance that your level 4 trader kicks out a level 3 is 10% higher than normal (in this case 50%), but the chance to kick out the level 5 trader is just 40% and the chance to kick out the Level 8 is at 1%. (I don't believe in 0% chances ;) )

Then the chances are checked, starting with the lowest trader level. Once one is kicked out, it stops. If nobody is kicked out, then so it be ;)
<end assumption>

I prefer safety in numbers (trade level or not). In one GC, my country of Prussia has a pretty huge chunk of the Baltic coastline, a solid line of provinces from what used to be the continental part of Denmark to Novgorod. I get 12 traders/year (the maximum). I own 3 COT's. Most of the time I have 3 total monopolies. Occasionally some puny country sends a merchant in, but they get kicked out quickly. The key to Monopoly is banning trade to your biggest foes (Sweden, Denmark, Russia). They hate you anyway cuz you stole the COT's from the in the first place, and a quick war can get you some quick provinces/dollars.

On the other hand, in this particular game, I focused too much on economic might and let my armies degrade to crap. Russia and Denmark then proceeded to gangbang my lilly ass so bad that I said it was all over.

Thank you all for more insight into trading matters!
For every town there is a window telling you the sort of merchandise it produces and the name of the country that dominates production. What does it mean, if for instance Spain dominates 70% of world ore production? Is it an advantage to monopolise production of a class of merchandise?
:confused:

Basil,

I think part of the problem is the timing of our questions on the board now. Most of the hard-core fans of EU were beta testers who played a lot during the beta test period or else have purchased the German version & are busy playing it! The staff, it seems, is busy with the releases coming out as well as probably getting into Holiday Mode (I think in Europe they are in that more frequently/for longer periods than here in the States :)).
