Complete crash when starting the game!

Technical Problem

I have a technical problem that I need your help with please.

Game Version & Patch (incl. publisher): HoI 1.0.0.1 plus patch 1.05

OS & build/SP: Win XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 1

Computer, CPU & speed: Medion Intel Pentium 4 LapTop, CPU 2,6 GHz

RAM: 512 MB

Free HDD space: 4,36 GB

Video (brand, model, driver, memory): NVidia GeForce Go FX 5200 Bios Version: 4.34.20.17.04 Updated on Version: 6.22.100.1441

Sound (brand, model, driver): Realtek AC97 Audio

DirectX Version: 8.1 oder höher

I read the stickies but I still have the following problem:

I installed the game twice and during the starting sequence it crashes the whole pc. There is shortly a page showed which mentions some problems with the grafic card. But it disappears immediately so I can't read all of it. I installed the newest drivers from nvidia and followed all rules you gave on your support side. But the crash is still there. Please give me a detailed answer how to solve this problem, otherwise I'll give back the game.

Some things to try:
1. Rename or delete Hearts of Iron\avi directory.
2. Set Windows display settings to 800x600 or 1024x768 with 16-bit color (65536 colors) before running the game.
3. Kill any non-essential processes. I can't help identify which are essential since I'm not familiar with WinXP.

First kudos to you for reading the stickies and following the correct procedures!

Follow the advice jdrou has outlined above. It should clear up your problem, the AVI folder rename is the key one to try first.

Thanks so far for your fast reply....but actually the problem is still the same!! I don't know what to do.....I exactly followed your instructions, but the failure occured again!

Try installing 1.05C.
Run the directX diagnostic program.
Tell me at what exact point it crashes. Do you see the intro videos? the main screen ...

crash point

It crashes exactly when it comes to "Initializing graphics". I can hear the sound but then it crashes. No intro videos. The screen gets blue for a second with some wrting about my graphic card and then the pc shuts down and restarts.

And when I try to run the HoI.exe from the 1.05c patch....a system error occurs that tells me "Critical error! Excel file not found!"

Who is the publisher of your version? thier logo should be on the cd.

the 1.05c patch must be extracted into the HOI folder, and all files should be overwritten, and directory structure maintained.
In other words there should be no seperate exe file for you to run from the 1.05c patch.

I'm not too knowledgable on this one, but since your problems seem to be caused by your video card... maybe you should update their drivers?

The current NVidia Graphics drivers for the FX series (XP/2k) is 52.16

I have exactly the same problem, and it dossent help with the newest driver!
i have uppdated evert thong that you can uppdate

dossent help with changing name on the avi folder eathier.
