ConfedAARate Glory: The Story of the Confederacy, 1936-1948
Very Hard-Furious, 1.03

(I used the CSA mod downloadable from one of those sites, can't remember which. I took the u00.inc and tossed it in with the 1.03 Road to War scenario, obviously fixing the usa.inc as well. Technology is similar to what America has, somewhat inferior on the naval techs.)

The Confederacy won the Civil War after its victory at Gettysburg. The Yankee had been humbled and the Confederacy was now recognized by European states. The Union had no choice but to let the Confederates go. The treaty, signed in Washington, granted the Confederacy all the states that had seceded as well as Kentucky, which wanted to join the south, and what would become the states New Mexico and Seqoiah. The economy began to grow again, and inflation began to reside. The Confederacy was forced to free its slaves by the Europeans during the late 1800's in return for continued support and continued purchasing of Confederate cotton, something the Confederacy could ill live without. The Great War brought with it the first time Confederates and Yankees fought on the same side, against the Central Powers. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles, and though many hoped that the Confederacy and Union would begin to reconcile, old enmities once again flared up and the old feelings once again settled in. In the 20's, the "Jackson Line" was planned by the Generals. A line of small forts and general watch points, it would provide the Confederacy a small advantage in the event the Union attacked. The Great Depression only heightened fears of another war, as both nations languished under their own economic deadweight. The Union recieved a Roosevelt to save them, the Confederacy recieved fascism. Elected in to office in the 1931 elections, the Radical Conservative party had been a popular item from the mid 20's when it was formed. After Black Tuesday, the Confederacy wanted strong leadership to pull it through. President Jake Featherston was what they got, and with it a government that became increasingly top-heavy. The traditional Confederate reliance on state governments is the only thing that prevented the Confederacy from becoming near-Hitlerian.

With the end of the '35 elections, and the second election victory of the Radical Conservatives, a new era of prosperity has begun. As the world creeps out of the Great Depression, the Confederacy has found itself more industrialized than ever before. Featherston's policy of building factories and putting people to work for the state had given the Confederacy a decent army and navy, and when the depression ended and Congress forced the President to privatize the factories what had once been a largely agricultural state found itself producing more oil than it needed, enough coal to export without worry, and the industrial infrastructure to continue on prosperous in to the future. The Radical Conservatives now have the next four years to guide the Confederacy. A new political figure has appeared across the ocean, one Adolf Hitler, who is turning Germany in to a great power once again. The Confederacy sits dormant on the other side of the sea oblivious. As does indeed much of the world.

And now, I bring you, Confederate Glory: The Story of the Confederacy, 1936-1948 :)

I think I got it at the site Dan Cook keeps flashing around. The one you have to register at. If you have ICQ or AIM I could send you the files I'm playing with, which is a combination of that mod and some of my own toying around. And no, I haven't had the pleasure of reading Turtledove's books :( I know what I know from different forums and all the talk about it here.

===============

Mary awoke with a start. Dreams had been haunting her for months now, and always the same. Yet when she awoke she could remember nothing more than the fact that it was the same dream as before. The sun shone in through the window of her bedroom, the curtains gently flowing in the breeze. It was early May and she left her windows cracked open at night when the weather was nice enough. She got out of bed and stretched, then opened the windows fully to take in a breath of fresh air. This was Arkansas, and her parents had owned this ranch for as long as she could remember. The smell of fresh dew reached her nostrils and she smiled. Today she had a special meeting, one she couldn't wait to get to. Her parents had finally allowed her to spend the day with James. They were only 15, but who could tell her that? She was in love and this was her day. Looking out across the horizon she knew today was going to be the greatest day of her 16 years of life. The sun had only just risen an hour ago, and quickly forgetting the night's troubles she got dressed and went downstairs to join her mother in making breakfast.

In Texas, a scent of a different kind was filling the nostrils of greedy businessmen. This was the headquarters of Texaco, the world-reknowned Confederate oil company. Money and oil were the only thing they cared for, and the ever centralizationist Featherston was meeting with them to discuss the future of Confederate industries.

"...and after careful analysis of the Confederate industry," Jake addressed them,"it has come to my attention that the Confederacy lacks sufficient steel production to function efficiently." The oil businessmen grumbled, and one asked,"That's all very well and fine Mr. President, but what concern is that of ours?" Jake eyed the man with contempt and he knew it. He sank back in to his seat, his voice becoming quiet at the end of his question. "Without steel you cannot build your oil derricks, cannot build offshore platforms, cannot build ships to export the oil to the world. That is why I'm here, to ensure you have this steel. I have a proposal." Noone dared question again, after the sudden silence of the usually loud and interrogative Mark was silenced by the President. "I will allot for government ships to help increase oil exports around the world, and in the process line your pockets handsomely, if you will grant the government 25% of all the proceeds from oil shipped on the government's ships. The oil will be exchanged for money, of which 75% goes to you. In this way the government can buy more steel for the Confederacy." A murmur began to become audible throughout the room as businessmen talked to their neighbor and themselves. Featherston just smiled and stood at the head of the desk, and inquired,"What say ye?"

The deal was almost irresistable. Over the past five years Featherston had created an enviable military to even the British, and the government had its very own merchant marine. The deal was signed with haste. Noone in the room could deny that it was a very good deal. "It's good doing business with you, Mr. President." Mark said, shaking President Featherston'd hand. "No, the pleasure is all mine."

"Mary, come and help me with these pancakes please," Rebecca said. Rebecca, Mary's mother, was cooking the morning meal as she did every morning. "Yes mother," Mary replied. The pancakes were the toughest to cook because they didn't have the right kind of pan to make them. The depression had robbed them of much of their former wealth, and the cooking pan they used now had a dent in the bottom that pushed up, which made cooking a flat pancake very difficult. Her mother was busy with the sausages when her father, William, came downstairs. "My goodness something smells amazing! What's for breakfast this morning, honey?" "Pancakes and sausages, dear." They had been eating pancakes and sausages for a year straight, but after the initial shock of living through the depression had settled they began to make the best of it. "Why I bet these'll be the best pancakes we've ever had," he said looking over at Mary. Mary smiled and giggled, and soon the food was ready.

They sat and ate their breakfast peacefully, William reading the newspaper. It all seemed to take too long for Mary, who had quickly gobbled up her food before her parents and sat staring out the window once again. "When is James going to be here.." she thought to herself. She knew that he wouldn't be here for another few hours, and she had to do her chores first anyways. She envied the yankee girls sometimes, not having to follow all kinds of tradition. Once they had all finished, Mary and her mother cleaned the dishes. William had to tend to the ranch, and the ranch hands were already out starting ahead of William. They only had four ranch hands, a young Mexican and three black men. They couldn't afford to have any more and could hardly afford the ones they had now, even with the low wages. They couldn't complain though, for an Arkansas family they were still fairly wealthy. The horses brought in fine sums when they were sold and almost always won the horse shows.

Then James came, and took her off for a picnic down by the Mississippi. It was only a couple miles from the house, and the spot he had picked was "amazing." The day went just as she had hoped, and when she returned home she ate dinner and turned in early. Her good day gave way to the dreams, the same dreams...
