Hi there,

My friend and I have been playing Victoria 3 since it launched with no problems. However, after the first major update (1.2 update) we have been unable to connect for multiplayer games with each other. We keep getting the error, "could not connect to host" and "host connection times out."

When it DOES load, it takes a solid 10 minutes to start a brand new game. A saved game can take over 30 minutes just to upload.

We have zero connectivity issues playing Hearts of Iron 4, EU4, or CK3 or a dozen games from other companies. It specifically happens with Victoria 3.

We are tearing our hair out trying to find a fix for this. We have uninstalled and reinstalled the game multiple times, we've messed with internet and firewall settings, and still continue to have this problem.

We also do not play with any mods.

Can someone from Paradox please assist us in getting this game to work. We both purchased the game via Steam.

CK3 and Vic3 use the same MP service, and pretty similar MP code I believe, so it is a little odd you get this with one and not the other.

Does it make any different which of you is host?

Can you both try playing with any third person(s), as host or not? This is to see which of you two has the problem - or perhaps both!

We haven't played CK3 since Victoria 3 released, so we loaded up CK3 and have not played it in several months, we tried it just now, and it has similar loading and playing issues. It takes almost 5 mins+ to load a brand new game, and then when the game is running, there is severe latency and all commands are slow. In short, the game plays poorly. Victoria plays better, when it loads, but it has a very difficult time just even connecting. My friend is usually the one that hosts the games because he has more DLC than I do, but we have tried to play where I am the host and have still run into the same connectivity issues. We retried a brand new game on Victoria 3, and it took 6 minutes just to join the server, and the latency is poor initially, but became playable after the course of a few minutes.

It is normal for both those games to take quite a while to start - from PLAY in Steam to seeing the main menu - but I guess you are talking about then starting a new MP game or loading an MP save being slow, is that right? For both of you solo play is okay?

Can you both try playing with any third person(s) who does NOT have these problems?

It specifically happens when we try to reload a saved multiplayer game. We have not tried connecting to another random player to see if it is a issue. We can try that and get back to you.

Loading a multiplayer game is around 6mins long. Loading a saved multiplayer game is when it specifically crashes and gives the "failure to connect" occurring when we reload a SAVED multiplayer game. Any suggestions welcome.

There's only one option for MP services with this game, so I don't really have any tweaks to suggest in this case. You could try either or both of you using a VPN, if you have one, to bypass any firewalls that might be getting in the way.

That aside, I'd like to get the results of the tests with a third person, please.
