Is there a consensus on what is the "best" version of HOI2 - Darkest Hour or AoD? (I own both, but I wonder which one will have more "legs".

This kind of question makes a general consensus that flame war is fun and no consensus on the real question.

Good point. While not my intent (I am parent with little time to game and therefore little time to fully explore both games), it was a poor question. Withdrawn.

Why is that a good point? I read your OP and I don't see it as being flamebait and you shouldn't have withdrawn your legitimate question. I also read JRHINDO's sig, and he references Darkest Hour twice. Bias perhaps?

To your question, I don't see how there possibly could be a consensus. People who play this game have different views of how it should work. People who mod this game also have different views of how it should work. Both versions have their followers but there's never going to be a consensus on which mod is best.

I'll use myself as an example. I've played AoD and while I haven't actually played DH I have seen it played by friends who own it. Neither one is my favorite version, I think they both do things that I can do without. My favorite version is just regular old HOI2/Arma, fully patched, with DAIM installed over it. I also like Kaiserreich and WiF, for different reasons. I understand that some people will make the claim that AoD and DH are standalone, not mods, but I consider them to be mods because neither of them would exist without the original HOI2 to use as a base.

If you list all of the HOI2 mods, neither AoD nor DH make my top 3. I think you should expand your original question to include all HOI2 mods, you'd probably get a pretty good debate. I'm throwing my vote in for DAIM, with WiF in second place(would be first except for unrealistic build times for some countries.)

I, who made WiF, was part of DH team, and implemented most of WiF's relevant content in it. Thus I can hardly see why anyone would ever play HOI2+WiF instead of DH (which features both the full game and an advanced version of ARM patch 1.3, making it worthless to get HOI2+DD+DDA since you can play ARM mods on DH).

Oh hello you. First, is because your user pic is an American fag meaning you are obviously biased toward USA? Oh surely. Well frankly I dont give a damn because thats irrelevant. Second, since when do sigs have anything to do with post content unless referred to?? Third, travel a bit around the AoD and DH forum to found dozens of similar threads filled with nerd rage and fanboy warring.

American fag? I hope that's a typo. You accused the OP of flamebaiting, and he caved, which means you effectively shut down a thread that was asking a valid question. Your sig does matter when the OP asks about DH versus AoD and you come in with an out of bounds accusation and your sig shows a clear affiliation with DH. As for you giving a damn, the speed of your response says it all.

Most of my post to gunboat had absolutely nothing to do with you, I'm really interested in what forum members think is the best version of the game, but you came in here calling me gay and web frontin'. You added absolutely nothing to the question about which version is best, which is hilarious coming from the guy who accused the OP of trying to start a flame war.

I still think DAIM is best, closely followed by WiF. As far as AoD vs. DH I vote for AoD. Any comments on that or are you going to come in here again and post some irrelevant nonsense about sexual orientation or whatever else you can think of that doesn't relate to the topic?

I hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way. I have a healthy professional respect for not only the amount of time and effort it must have taken to produce the games you have, but also most of the changes you've made in them. I don't think DH is a bad game, it's a very good game, but the reason I didn't buy it is because after spending hours watching my friend play it I thought that you got a little too ambitious with the timeline, that's all. It's a very good game, just not my favorite, but I'm sure that there are plenty of people on the forum who would disagree with me.

I still like the Arma/DAIM because it's more abstracted than most mods tend to be, which I like. I'm sure there are people who disagree with me on that too, but that's the whole point of asking which version people like best.

I spend most of my gaming time playing HOI3 (and C+C), but I still from time to time fire up WiF and Arma/DAIM. I'm not knocking DH, I just have other really good options and DH just didn't make the cut. That's just my opinion and I hope you don't take it as a wholesale slam on your game.

Sorry if my post sounded like I took yours wrong because I didn't. :)
My only point is the following: given that DH also features a 'light' version which keeps straigthforward compatibility with ARM mods, and provided that DH engine optimization alone make the game worthy, I can't see why anyone would play a mod over ARM when he can play it over DH and enjoy a more optimized game (not to mention the 'full' DH game of course :) ).
Unfortunately DH Light has often been neglected and its existence may even remain unknown to some readers.

Thanks for posting that. I've been away from the forum for a little while and I wasn't aware that there is a lite version of DH. If I can put that over my existing version of ARMA then I'm definitely interested.

To OP.

Quantifying what is the best version of what game is highly subjective and really is not the best way to go.

Having said that what Fernando said is true that the most "up to date" version of the HOI2 series is DH and would serve the OP very well if purchased.

Also little note to both Didaro and JRHINDO... lets tone things down a bit please... i am sure that no one meant any harm with what was said and that this is all a big mis-understanding (note the Green in this sentence -- that is the moderator in me speaking)

Thank you,

Corey

im considering buying one of them as well so id also like to hear the pros and cons of each one, add iron cross to that question as well. no need for a flame war, peoples opinions who have played all three versions will be fine.:)

I do not own AOD but have played it a little and also played DH. I prefer DH because I feel like it is a refined HOI2, and it doesnt slow down which is a huge plus. It looks fantastic also and the biggest draw for me is the 1914 scenario. While not completely polished as the 1936 as they obviously have created it from scratch, it has so much potential and that alone gets it over the line for me.

From HOI1 up to HOI3 SF (That I all own legally), and after have just played a little bit with DH, I must confess this is what HOI should have been from start, in term of programming quality : speed, smoothness of the UI, integration of both manual and automatic management. IT is bigger than HOI2, but without the monster size of HOI3 (size that hide the various glitches that plague the game from day 1).

So if I dare to issue a list, I would named 1st exaequo Mod 33 (my prefered from day 1) and DH. I believe the day Koenig will have adapted Mod 33 to DH we will have a clear winner.

On the bad point, DH is a stand alone game, we have to buy it ... but by electronic means. My problem being I am expatriate in Thailand, and law almost forbide me to own a CC (I shall earn about 5 000 euros a month to have right to ask!?!?). So I did tested with an unlawfull release (with VMWAre as I was mindfull to not get virus; and it is DELETED as I write that); so what other possibility I can have to buy DH without breaking the law ?

Any answer From F.Torres (in PM would be great) will be fully appreciate!

Do you have any friends that could buy a copy, download it, put it in disk and send it to you? You could then pay them back, or not depending upon your arrangement. To be clear, even if they owned a copy of DH already, to be fully in the clear, they would need to download a second copy. This would be legal in terms of the computer world.

Well, I precised it here, because it is a big problem for every extension or add on (while the vanilla game can be buy here without problem). My hope being a solution could be found (maybe a local retailor, as P'Dox game are distribuated in thailand by a local company that repackage the game).

the true slution would be to hand the money to a thai coworker and get my DL done; and it is what I will do.

Unfortunately, it looks like the trend is more towards downloading and less towards physical copies. Good luck.
