Summary

Cost of the domain ability "Create artist" higher than domain point cap

Expected Result

I would expect that the cost of any domain power never exceeds the point cap. Having to wait until the cap is reached and wasting (likely happening) overflow to do so is enough of a penalty, IMO.

Actual Result

Some domain powers with escalating costs can exceed the cap though. In my case it is the artist recruitment, but according to this https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...ost-is-higher-than-cap.1648382/#post-29518357 older report (where the official response was that it would get look into) it happens/happened in the past also integration of vassals.

Steps to reproduce

Likely recruiting too many artists; in my case in the stage of the game where the cap is 300, but likely happens with other cap figures as well.

Build Number

1.0.22040.F

As far as I know the game has been changed so that it now allows to use any domain force at 400, even if it's growing cost would succeed 400. Earlier, when the cost of 400 was succeeded, the domain force was not longer usable, whatever you did.

The question is whether this should be valid for earlier caps (100, 200, 300) as well. You could argue that you have to work with what you have, and you could argue that it is not necessary to restrict the players like that. In the end, this is a balancing issue. I'm not really sure. Maybe this should be decided for each domain force separately.

In short: it's by design, not a bug.

In long: We cap Domain Power costs at 400, which is the real "hard cap" in the game. You can be "soft-capped" at 100,200,300 Domain XP depending on your Government, but the Age 8 Governments have a cap of 400, which is the highest you can achieve in-game. If players want to keep using powers after they exceed their Domain XP cap, they should upgrade to a newer Government.

Powers that scale in cost are like that are intended to deter possible exploits or balance issues. If the power is good enough that you keep clicking it we increase the cost until you can't click it anymore. If you still like using the power at 400 Domain XP cost it's a sign to us that there's something deeper going on.

Do you feel like pawning Artist themselves are that valuable compared to other domain powers (including Social Fabric) or is it that you have so much income that reaching this point is inevitable?

Thanks for the detailed explanation and reasoning, I really appreciate it :)

I consider myself still as fairly new to the game, so I don't feel qualified yet to perfectly weight domain powers against each other, but I can at least explain why I runned into my (preceived) issue with Artists: I quite like the ability to sacrifice them for filling up you culture row and being able to use a cultural power instantly again. It is also fairly powerful, if you play a game heavily focussed on directly controlled regions (which puts naturally a strain on you "culture income") or just temporarily have went a bit overboard with exerting direct control. Finally, the domain powers inside the Culture domain didn't felt that powerful enough to deter me from doing so - but I concede that this last point might be related to my limited experience with the game or the particular circumstances in that game. Same for the comparson with the civil units of other the domains...I felt so far less need to spam them: Some of them aren't permanently consumed at all (Merchants) or at least not regularly (Pioneers, exception is absorbing outposts), others are limited in their use (Searchers are nice, but a couple of gold mines is enough). However, as said I'm far from having tried all of the possible ones you can meet in the special ages...

Are you aware of the age 8 national spirit 'Pop Culture'? There you can get pop divas, and there is an ideal where you can spend those pop divas for +1,5 x culture fill regardless of where the culturemeter stands? That may be your dream domain power!
