Well, I have this new MP idea, where players would be to start at the bottom of the ladder, as a count, in 1066 scenario. Either as a count that already exist in normal 1066 scenario or a modded count made with character making guidelines based on this thread. The point of the game would be to be as powerful as possible in 1419 / 1453, but the main challenge would also be making it there with one dynasty that starts the game as a lowly count. So long term scope and loads of patience is a necessity, because hasty dowing of superior enemy can ruin your game and as a count there is rather few things to do.
I would not limit choices of counties, expect rule out those counties that start with a guarantee to inherit powerful duchy, like for example count of Hainaut. Count of Gent would be ok, because inheritance of a powerful duchy would require either luck or assasinations. Also, I'd prefer have all starting player counts married for two reasons, 1) to discourage for girls like Agnes d'Aquitane who are guaranteed jackpots and 2) to save players from the tedious search for wives at start. Of course it is possible to go for jackpot girls, if you get lucky (wife dies of childbirth) or assasinate her, but again the point is that it's not automatic. Also, counties that can immediately create duchy (Luxembourg for example) are also free to choose, because the county you choose gives you either less or more challenge, depending on how much difficulty you like. I actually guess making 1 prov duchies without any guaranteed big inheritances as choices. There are very few of those though.
Also, this game would likely feel like many player SP, especially at start, so if constant conflict between players is of high importance to you, this game is probably not for you. But I think that in this game conflict between players would come more naturually, from having conflicting interests (like two players both trying to get Venice). Also player cooperation would likely play an important part, as some strong enemies would need player cooperation to tackle successfully.
Then on the good side, the satisfaction of rising from a puny count into great power over the centuries is likely higher than starting from the top and stomping around over weaker AIs over and over again during those same centuries. Not to mention the ability to be Habsburgs or Hohenstaufens and attempt to recreate their achievements.
Also I believe that doing this in MP and comparing your success to other players success can give satisfaction too.
But the point is not to screw other players for screwings sake, like excomming their best heirs just because you can do it as a papal controller. You don't excomm good heirs of random AI, right?
