Just curious. The normal entry reads like

ENG;England;X;X;X;X...

There are some entries, though, which have no Xes, only semicolons. They are

ARG; Aragonien
BRI; Bretagne
BUR; Burgund
GRA; Granada
KUR; Kurland
NOR; Norwegen
PRO; Provence

What does that mean? My first guess was, they don´t exist as independent right away, but that´s not it as e.g. Kurland surely exists in the GC scenario.

There are other interesting entries (with Xes):

HEI; Heiliges Römisches Reich (Holy Roman Empire)
ITA; Italien (Italy)
KAL; Kalmarer Union
MER; Söldner (mercenaries)
PIR; Piraten (pirates)
ROY; Royalisten
USA; Vereinigte Staaten
MUS; Muslimische Staaten
REB; Rebellen (rebels)

What would hapen, if I edit the scenariofiles in the usual way to play a minor with these? Would I be able to play the Pirates or the whole Holy Roman Empire?

Not only Kurland (which is a vassal of the Deutsche Orden), but also Granada exists in 1492, though it is at war with Spain and usually disappears by March 1492.

About the mercenaries... a couple of the AARs posted by Beta reviewers seem to indicate (unless it is literary flair) that mercenaries used to be a part of the game, but disappeared for the released version.

Great question, though. I hope someone in the know answers you.

If you edit the setup file to play as a country that does not exist on the map at that point in history, the game crashes when you try to start the scenario. There's probably a way to edit the provinces to create countries, but I don't know which file contains those data.

Yes, it is very simple. The file you need to edit is 1492.inc (for the Grand Campaign). Look at the existing country entries and add one, for example NOR (Norway). You then have to make sure that the home provinces and owned provinces are set to the correct ones, and remove them from the previous owner. You also have to move the city and army entries from the previous owner. Specify which city should be the capital and you are set. :)

I've made a modified Grand Campaign in which Norway exists as a vassal to Denmark, which is almost as accurate as the 'part of Denmark' approach in the unmodified game.

Is there a way to modify how likely a state is to allow itself to be annexed? Or is that totally independent of the state involved?

I wonder if there are events built into the game related to some of these? Certinaly the USA and some of the others can appear in parts of the game. But what about ITA and KAL? If you are playing as Sweden and you annex Denmark, would you receive an announcement that you have reformed/solidifed the Kalmarer Union? And with ITA, could you unite Italy, playing as one of the Italian minors and thereby have the game change the name of your state to Italy?

Certainly, they add some interesting ideas for scenario designers.

Some of the later tags are used for country groups.

ie.. HRE for Heiliges Reich and ITA for Italy. This is to keep one database for all german and italians for example for some special data.

KAL is an old country that was removed. Yellow flag with a red cross and the wet dream of any pan-scandinavian nationalist.

How do you then add leaders for one of these countries? There are Leaders files - do you create a Leader file for the country with that 3 character extension and put in information for the leaders? Is this like the thread on creating leaders for minors?

And another question - is there any way to edit the shields if you create a new country / use one of these?
