(Note to tech gods: my preamble is long, but all the required info is in this post, please don't run away at the volume of this post, I just wanted to be as thorough as I possibly could)

Apologies for the similarity to this thread, but my situation is not quite the same, so I figured that I would create a new thread. (Mods, if this should be in the above thread, please move it there, thanks)

Anyway, here is what is happening to me:

I got this game about 10 days ago from Gamersgate.com and I am LOVING it. A friend of mine turned me onto it and he is currently teaching me how to play. We are both playing as Germany in the 1936 campaign. Currently, it is August 4, 1941 and we are 1 month into our offensive into the Soviet Union. I had some issues in the beginning with my router, but having perused these forums, I found out what ports to forward and all has been fantastic since. My friend is not behind a firewall/router (yes, I yell at him all the time :D ) but if we pause for more than a minute, I lose the connection, but I can work around that. I say all of this just to add to the situation so that any of you HoI2 tech gods know every variable that I can provide.

OK, preamble complete, here is the crux of my problem: Until this evening, everything ran perfectly, but once we started the attack into Russia, I will crash to the desktop within 30 seconds of resuming the game. And it does not matter if it is the latest savegame or one from last week. Oddly enough, I can load the same savegame in single player and it will not crash. It also makes no difference if my friend sends me the .eug file via email, dcc (irc), in-game transfer and it makes no matter if it is compressed at all (rar/zip/7zip, etc) but again, the game plays fine in single player. So, given all of that, I (obviously) can point to multi-player as the source of the issue.

I am linking my DXDiag info, and posting my settings.cfg and the windows event log that I get when it crashes, any help would be great.

One final note: I have completely (manually and automatically) un-installed the game and it makes no difference.

Text of event:

Faulting application hoi2.exe, version 1.0.0.1, faulting module hoi2.exe, version 1.0.0.1, fault address 0x000bc002

And, as usual, Microsoft support basically tells me: "An application has encountered a problem and you can now go die in a fire" :(

I hope this is enough information to help start anyone brave enough to help me troubleshoot this issue. Thank you in advance.

(Note: I destroyed the character limit with the DXDiag info in here, so here's a link to my DXDiag.txt , if there's a way to bypass that, I have no idea how)

Sorry, I made the links blue because white/light grey text makes seeing links difficult.

wow, I talk too much...

Questions

1. What version of HOI2 are you running ... HOI2 Regular, HOI2 DD or Arma?

2. What patch version are you on? (as Seen on the load screen)

Corey

Sorry, in my endeavor to provide everything, I forgot 2 of the more important pieces of info.... :/

1. DD
2. 1.3a (JCJS)

Well If the savegame does not crash in Single player then there must be something in that file that causes Multiplayer to have a problem...

This is probably better off in the Multiplayer forum..... where they have much more experience with Multiplayer issues than we do here.

Also be prepared to post that savegame file so that they can look at it to find any bugs etc.

The only quick thing that comes to mind about it may be the Ghost fleet issue..... did you mil control any countries before invading the SU?

Corey

We control Slovakia, Hungary and Romania (we're germany)

Check for ghost fleets (lots of them) in the savegame file.....

Corey

So how do we hunt down and delete these ghost fleets? I'm shattersouls friend btw. I loaded up the save file in sp and used nofog to search out for ghost fleets, it seems most major naval nations have atleast 10.

As GG stated above, there are ghost fleets all over. We initially dropped military control of Romania and the game ran good again for a while. But after about 5 minutes, one or both of us would crash. We are about to try it again, but after GG dropped military control from every country, I'll let you know how that works out.

I was thinking that you were dropping your MP game due to all these ghost fleets and it causeing sync issues.....

Let us know please.

Corey

Well, after we dropped all military control, it played for about 5 minutes...then crashed again...this is maddening

Did you clean out the ghost fleets?

If not please ask that question in the HOI2 DD Main forum... i believe someone has posted an event that will do this for you....

I found pacmans ghost fleet remover and it deleted 90 ghost fleets! I hope this works im just waiting for shattersoul to get back to me.

Didn't work, even after cleaning the ghost fleets, I crashed after about 5 or 6 minutes.

*Edit*: I also manually uninstalled and completely re-installed, no luck.

From looking around the forums, it appears that the ghost fleet issue (which may or may not ultimately be my problem) has been around a LONG time, has Paradox stopped supporting the game? Are there plans for a patch? I'd really hate to have wasted $20 on an unplayable game. (Sure I can play SP, but that's not what I was looking for what I got this game)

It may be the fact your both playing Germany and sharing it. I am not sure how much that section has been used by the community. IN all honesty in the over 5 years of this game your the first person I heard of using this feature.

I thought that too myself but i thought it would be a good way to help him learn the game was to play with the same country, so far its worked rather well I didnt know it wasnt done often ive enjoyed it alot. Anyway thanks for the support i think its actually working again but i guess we'll find out after we play for more than half an hour.

Well, well, well. It seems that the issue is now sorted out. (At least, we've played twice for at least an hour each time with no issues)

Here is what I know:

1.) If we take military control of ANY country, we get the ghost fleet bug, so don't ever do that (for me, it was only a problem in MP, in SP I can take over anyone) at least until Paradox decides to patch the bug.

2.) FRESH INSTALL (Do a manual un-install, click here to learn how to if you do not already know how)

3.) See points 1&2 many times...

In short, Paradox desperately needs a patch to all versions of HoI2, this bug encompasses DD as well as Arma and (I would assume) all other versions. This is as close as I have been to a "game-killer" bug as I have ever been. Paradox NEEDS to fix this NOW or this game is a bust, and an EPIC bust at that.

coreymas: Thank you for doing what you, you are an amazing asset to the HoI community, you keep this community alive with a broken game, I will strive to help as much as you do as I learn this game, thank you.

Thank you I try to do what i can when i can.

Paradox is aware of the Ghost Fleet bug and there is a patch on the way (expected mid March) that hopefully will address this issue.

Stay with Paradox.... they do listen to the community and they try their best to solve issues....
