I've been playing happily, with the 1.04 patch, then suddenly I find that saving causes a CTD and reloading the attempted save is impossible.

My system specs are all fine, plenty of memory, Windows ME, other games/programs (incl. other Paradox games) all work as normal; no viruses. Only the minimum number of programs are running in the background and AFAIK they aren't doing anything when the crash happens.

I'm at 1121 (I think) in the game and my kingdom has become rather large but presumably that's not the problem.

The problem produces a bloated corrupted save file (55mb); the previous save file being about 13mb I think. I notice there is no updated cfg file. Needless to say it completely locks up the system if I try to load the corrupted save file, and I then have to reboot.

You can check this out, It is really a Bug forum issue.
Thanks, I had already read that thread, but my autosaves have been fine so far (touch wood) so I thought it might be a slightly different prob.
Maybe I'll try the AVI renaming trick - I seem to remember that worked on EU2 a long time ago....

ps How do you expect a middle-aged Brit with negligible knowledge of science or technology to distinguish accurately between a bug and a tech support issue? :D

Bug = Software related
Tech Support = Hardware/driver related.

Ya okay so sometimes the line is blurry. :)

But how do I know which is causing my problem? All I know is it don't work ... :D

Only having a moan, good to hear from you Castellon.

Wise old owls like yourself are always free to post here and ask.

Autosaves are definitely OK and it looks like new save files are OK too.
The problem only happens if I try to save over a previous save file.

Is it consistant, eg. if you start a new game, play one moth, save the game, play another month and save over the one you just saved, does that crash?

I haven't been quite as systematic as that. I will try and report back in due course.

okay keep me updated.

It's not doing it any more ...
the only thing I changed was to kill the little green Bink goblin by changing the name of the AVI file.

I remember now, this was the same problem I had to correct with EU2. Can Paradox do something different with their intro video next time, please?
Or does this only happen on a few computer set ups?

Does not happen with all systems, it is a bink problem, or an interaction of the two, No one really does there own inhouse video/Audio compression and format software. It would be just too expensive.
