I played for many hours yesterday at home and then again today at the office, smooth as silk. Came home and tried to play and it would would display the initial start screen (with the Register button) but would immediately CtD when I clicked Play. No error message.

I had swapped a monitor running 1680 x 1050 (that had a backlight flickering) for a monitor running 1600 x 900 in between successful and unsuccessful sessions. The settings.txt file did not automatically refresh and saved the old settings. Or, when I saw the message that the game was "setting up for first time installation" (or something like that) and installing Direct X, I clicked Cancel because the game had already installed. That might have been CK2's way of upgrading the video settings, I don't know.

Either way, changing the resolution manually at Libraries/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/settings.txt fixed the problem.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit; game copy via Steam.

Good luck to all!

Worked great for me; I changed the resolution in the game options, but the game couldn't start up after that (the game crashed a few seconds after I clicked the .exe). I had to fix it manually.
