Hmmmm.
The game is made to play under Directx7a.
Maybe its the Directx8 that is the problem?
Myself, I never download a Directx update but wait for one to appear on a game CD.
Can you revert back to Directx7a and try?

Concur.

I have directx 8 and it actually works better than 7 even with some areas that have repeatable crash-tendencies.

Looking at the hardware you have an at-the-lower-bound chipset... I think you may want to start looking at other limitations like local bus and so forth. That machine has waaay more RAM than the chipset can probably even use efficiently unless there is some fantastic transfer capacity. It may be that 200mhz 'puters can handle the program but they may need some help.

One other probability: with an older machine, there is a good bet that if the chipset will handle it, you MAY be looking at an obsolete driver issue. Could be video, could be sound.

Same Problem

Got this problem, too, at first installed Direct X 8.0 and then none of my Direct X games ran, kept getting VSOUND blue screen of death errors. So I uninstalled 8.0, reinstalled 7.0, got my other games working, and now EU gives me the same problem, dead at the click of the Start button. I can choose scenarios OK, also noticed that I got a lockup by choosing the Options button, changing something and proceeding....

I have a Soundblaster 16 PCI, and an ATI All-in-Wonder video card, one of these may be the problem, but if that's the case, the game must go back. (sob) Otherwise, 128 Mb RAM and 250 Mhz Pentium II I should hope would be sufficient.

The Soundblaster should not be the problem but the ATi card may be. Can you run DirectX diagnostics and check that DirectDraw works properly?

Start => Run => dxdiag

Click the display tab and then Test DirectDraw. Another question, is it DirectX 7.0a you are running?

OK. I'm working now.
To get past the CRASH AFTER START MENU...
1. Reinstalled (formatted hard drive) Windows ME
2. Installed EU with Direct X 8 BEFORE I installed my Geforce drivers and SB drivers.
3. Installed Geforce drivers, started game (sans sound),
and it went all the way to scenario start.
4. Installed SB drivers, started game and it went all the way to sceanrio start.

I thought I had a new problem, but after reading another thread, there is none. When you quit the game, you have to be patient. Takes EU about 15 or so seconds sometimes to exit to main Windows screen. I thought it was hangin up on me.

P.S. Just struggled through about 60 minutes of the tutorial. Jeez what a pain to grasp all that's going (or not) going on. I LOVE IT!

Mike: After installing, or reinstalling, directX *always* uninstall your graphic drivers and reinstall. The new Directx appears to take more notice of them this way.

Howling: you are correct about quitting the game. When I quit (surrender) it will go to the desktop as though it has finished *but* if I click a mouse button during the next 3 minutes the screen will freeze. The only way out then is to power down!

So now I quit the game and go make a coffee or summat. When I come back all is ok. I cannot make this out as there is no hard drive activity........
