Same problem

I've been playing version 109 campaign, standard victory, normal with the ai set
to aggressive.
I have windows Me.
The save is just a normal one,so the "odd character" bug shouldn't apply.
The game had been running fine up until now.I have just had 5 crash to desk top (ctd) & 2 freezes.(game not responding)
The crashing happens when I click the save or sometimes it starts to load & then crashes.
These have all occurred after loading a save, except the last freeze, which happened when I reloaded the game with the internet open.(to check settings)
One "odd" occurrence is that the display settings on my desktop have been enlarged, but when I checked the display settings in the control panel, they still claim to be set at high color (16 bit)-1024x768 pixels.Iirc, this "resizing" occurred after the 2nd ctd.
The game had been running fine using the above settings before.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Sounds to me like your same game file has become corrupt during these multiple freezes and crashes. If so it's unlikely we can fix it. You could look into the file for any obvious corruption.

Can you try the same save on another machine with a fresh install of EU2 + 1.09? If you start a fresh game on the problem machine does it save and load OK?

Somehow the problem has seemingly fixed itself.
I loaded the game this morning & clicked the last save. All ok.
I then tried reloading the save again & it promptly crashed.
I loaded the game again & let it run for a month or so,without doing anything.
I then saved this.
I then reloaded that save & it worked fine.
I've repeated loading new saves about 8-10 times with no trouble.
Perhaps the game doesn't like working Sundays? :)

Loading a save while in a running game is a known problem, some data from the existing game does not get flushed out of memory. You should always exit to the main menu before loading a save.
