This crash seems to only affect saves from previous versions, it should not occur in games started in 1.9.6.

NO, I'm here to tell you that in my case the game 100% crashes to desktop whenever I start a new game, right before I could see the map

Same issue here. Started a new Observer today, no mods and ctd after 10 years (15 minutes on speed 5). Please check your crashdump database, this crash creates a dump that gets uploaded.

I'm having the same issue with crash to desktop. The game is consistently crashing after 15-20 minutes on a new starts in version 1.9.6.
